There was a clash thirty years back on this day when a veteran actress scored over one of the emerging Khans who would go on to become a huge star in the next decade. The film featuring the Khan was expected to do better but it lost the fight from day one.

The clash was between Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin which featured Aamir Khan and Phool Bane Angaray which was a heroine orientated film with Rekha. Phool Bane Angaray was not expected to do well as there was a supposed to be a lot of negativity around Rekha and this was the case with the media and within the industry. This was because her husband had commited suicide and the industry and media was putting the blame on her.  But Phool Bane Angaray which released around this time opened to excellent reponse all over and sustained very well.

The first day collections of Phool Bane Angaray were better than Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin even in Mumbai city though eventually Dil Hai ke Manta Nahin fared better in Mumbai city. The only cities across india where Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin opened better were Bangalore and Chennai and this was because Phool Bane Angaray opened a week later in Bangalore and almost a month later in Chennai so lower comparable collections were pretty much invetable. Hyderabad was lower on day one but went ahead by the end week.  

In a major metro like Kolkata it was a one horse race as the collections of Phool Bane Angaray were double of Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin. The main centre of Bihar, Patna did collected more than three times higher and it was a similar story in Indore and Bhopal. In Delhi it was tight as Dil Hai ke Manta Nahin nearly caught Phool Bane Angaray by the end of week one but Phool Bane Angaaray remained 20% ahead despite having cinemas with lower capacities. However if we take the numbers from the whole circuit of Delhi / UP be it day one or final then Phool Bane Angaray won by a distance. 

In the final run Phool Bane Angaray emerged a Solid HIT while Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin was Semi Hit / Average fare mainly due to a pretty good run in Mumbai city. There was a third angle in this clash with Hafta Bandh which had Jackie Shroff as lead but that film managed a good initial in Maharashtra only and that was all it could as it faded fast.

Today (11th August) may not have seen the huge success but has seen big cast films released since 1995.


Toilet Ek Prem Katha released in 2017 was the biggest HIT on this day with Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna released in 2006 being the biggest film in terms of budget and cast.


Dhadkan was  another big film which did not quite do the business in 2000 it could have due to lacklustre opening in many parts of the country but the film manages to pick up a decent television occasionally today meaning it probably is the one which has longevity but this could be down to the blockbuster music.

Another point on this day is that it is one of the very few times that Shahrukh Khan actually lost a clash. Shahrukh Khan has an unbeatable record in clashes as he tends to come out on top most of the time but on 11th August he had two films Guddu and Oh Darling Yeh Hai India and they both defeated by the Rishi Kapoor / Nana Patekar starrer Hum Dono which eventually did fair business due to Mumbai circuit. The opening day figures of this clash were as follows and it was a comfortable win for Hum Dono with 46 lakhs. But two Shahrukh Khan films clashed with each other so the opening business was also divided. Combined opening for both films was 47 lakhs.

Shah Rukh Khan has won 33 major clashes (29 solo leads) and more than 5 minor clashes in his 34-year career. But minor clashes should not be counted because other films do not have any chance of grossing more, as they have very few screens. And the same rule applies to Star's films, as there are some films where he is on the poster for a hardly 20-minute role, like the 10-year-delayed film Yeh Lamhe Judaai Ke or Maya Memsaab, which released on few screens. Major Clashes means a clash with some other film that has a reasonable number of screens at least or has any type of chance of grossing more. A one-day difference can be counted as a direct clash, because some films also have paid previews and some don't. The movie should gross more to win a clash. For example, a 4 crore film can make 10 crore and get superhit status, and a 100 crore film will get hit status after making 110 crore, but that doesn't mean the movie with a better verdict is a winner. The movie should gross more to actually win a clash. If one film is a bigger grosser and the other gets a better verdict, then it will be counted in the draw category.
