Recently, BoxofficeIndia answered a question about which Khan dominated the 90s decade. Many Salman fans were not happy with the answer because they felt Salman Khan did better than Shahrukh Khan in the 90s. But that's completely wrong.
This confusion is caused by fan-made sites like Indicine and Koimoi. They compare fake stats and manipulated verdicts without any kind of knowledge.
Madhuri Dixit was the biggest female superstar in the first half of the decade, followed by Karisma Kapoor in the second half. Salman Khan got the majority of success with these two Supreme actresses. When these actresses were at their peak. Salman Khan didn't get much credit in Hum Aapke hain kaun (1994). He was completely overshadowed by Madhuri Dixit. In 1994, Salman Khan did 4 films, 3/4 became washout disasters with washout initials, and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun became a huge all-time blockbuster and record-holder. After that, in the 1995 January Opinion Poll results, Salman Khan got just 1% votes. On the other hand, Madhuri Dixit alone got 52% of the votes in the Favorite Hero/Heroine category. That was the dominance of Madhuri Dixit in Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. Madhuri Dixit also won Filmfare for her performance in Hum Aapke Hain Kaun.
Salman Khan's best years in the 90s were 1998 and 1999. He managed to achieve a THIRD-place in these years. The year 1999 was a record year for Salman Khan. He made five films in 1999.Three multi-starrers became big hits, and two solo films failed at the box office. Most of his solo lead films bombed badly at the box office in the 1990s.
On the other hand, Shahrukh Khan had a huge fan following, only second to Amitabh Bachchan in the first half of the 1990s and the biggest in the second half. Shahrukh Khan used to command huge initials and scored the highest number of blockbusters in the 1990s.Shahrukh Khan had a huge star power average in the 90s. But Shahrukh Khan got Stardom in 1993, so he got only 7.5 years to perform. On the other hand, Sunny Deol was a well-established star even before 1990.That is the reason Sunny Deol has the most points in the 90s. But Shahrukh Khan had a much better star power average in 7 years. Sunny Deol had 7500+ points in 10 years with an average star power of 750+.On the other hand, Shahrukh Khan had 6000+ points in just 7 years, with an average star power of 850+.Decade belongs to Sunny Deol because of more years and more points, but if we compare the 1992–1999 phase, Shahrukh Khan was marginally ahead of Sunny Deol. Shahrukh Khan started his career on a positive note. And became a huge star with blockbusters like Baazigar and Darr in 1993.In 1995, Shahrukh Khan scored more than 10 crore footfalls in a single calendar year, which is 2000 crore adjusted net worth in the current era.In 1997, he scored 7.50 crores of footfalls and scored four back-to-back successful films in a single year. Overseas and worldwide, he was margins ahead of others.

This is only an India-based comparison.
We will compare screens, budget, overseas, worldwide, adjusted worldwide gross, and adjusted overseas after the full 90s Box Office India update.
We can't compare the net gross of the 1990s because there is a huge difference between the average ticket price of 1992 and 1999. That is the reason all films are compared on a footfall basis.

#1991
Judwaa v Judwaa 2 Comparision - 21 Years On
The film was also the film which gave the career of Salman Khan a major
lift as although he had much bigger Hits than Judwaa before they were either
two hero films like Saajan, Karan Arjun and Jeet or ensemble cast ones like Hum
Aapke Hain Kaun and Sanam Bewafa where the supporting artistes have major
roles.
#1991 AUG
Sridevi - A Very Rare Female Star
Madhuri Dixit: (1991 - 1997) - Madhuri
Dixit is the last female box office star the film industry has seen. Tezaab
made her a huge star after a few years of struggle and the success of Tezaab
was consolidated in a month with an even bigger blockbuster Ram Lakhan. But at
this point of time Sridevi was the reigning star and in a big way and it was
films like Dil, Saajan and Beta which made Madhuri Dixit that box office star.
Dil had Aamir Khan but it became a Madhuri Dixit film, coincidentally the first
four big hits of Aamir Khan (Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Dil, Rangeela and Raja
Hindustani) all propelled the heroines as they took the credit. Saajan had
Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan while Beta had Anil Kapoor but generally it was
Madhuri Dixit leading the way in these films. Then came the peak with Hum Aapke
Hain Kaun and Raja and it could be that no heroine had ever reached this level
but to live up to these box office expectations would have been difficult even
for a huge male star and the downfall started.
#1993 NOV
The biggest thriller HITS in India of all time
are probably Darr and Agni Sakshi. Darr had the advantage of the biggest stars
of the time with Sunny Deol ruling the roost and Shahrukh Khan closing in on
the top spot at the time.
Padmaavat - Where Does The CREDIT Go
Then the big battle is between the two heroes and
there is a winner as far as the audience is concerned. The trade and media is
giving the points to Ranveer Singh but at the end of the day he is the villain
and this is not a Baazigar / Darr scenario like it was with Shahrukh Khan
as the public was with Shahrukh Khan's character in these films and the
sympathy went to him which made him a major star. Here the public is not with
the character of Ranveer Singh as he is the villian.
#1994 JAN
TOP ACTOR DOWN THE YEARS
Shahrukh Khan hits the top as Sanjay Dutt is unavailable
for films. Mohra turns Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty into stars.
#1994 APRIL
Sridevi - A Very Rare Female Star
Even Shahrukh Khan played second fiddle to
Madhuri Dixit in Anjaam but Shahrukh Khan was on a crest of a wave at the time
and the audience could not accept him as an outright villain and the film was
rejected. Then came the peak with Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Raja and it could be
that no heroine had ever reached this level
#1994 AUG
“Ensemble cast ones like Hum
Aapke Hain Kaun and Sanam Bewafa where the supporting artistes have major
roles.”
“Then came the peak with Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and
Raja and it could be that no heroine had ever reached this level.”
“A male star has to do something in a film
where the audience takes to him in the big way and for Salman Khan it happened
with Dabangg and not Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. It was not only Dabangg as one film
cant lead to such super stardom but others like Bodyguard and Ek Tha Tiger
which helped cement the audience.”
The Family That FLOPPED Together
“The other side of
the industry will believe its difficult to make good female driven
films but thats not the case either as a Mother India and Hum Aapke Hain
Kaun stand with the male testosterone driven Sholay and Gadar as historic
blockbusters in Hindi cinema.”
Laapataa Ladies Box Office Collection (9 Weeks)
“Gone are the days of Rajhshris when these sort
of stories without the stars reached out to the wider audience and that
too when there were only single screens.”
Rewind - Twenty Six Years Of Hum Aapke Hain
Koun...!
The film had started with just 30 odd prints in
its first week and eventually more than 600 prints had to be taken out in its
theatrical run. Only Sholay (1975) had this many prints taken before while no
other film in history had even topped 400 prints.
#1994 NOV
REWIND - Ajay / Akshay
Combo Smashes Aamir / Salman Combo
"The star power was
different in 1994 compared to today as Salman Khan and Aamir Khan are among the
top three stars today but at the time Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn were the
bigger stars with Akshay Kumar getting amongst the top five with Mohra and Main
Khiladi Tu Anari. Ajay Devgn was also a better better bet than Aamir Khan and
Salman Khan"
#1995 AUG
Big Films Released On This Day Including A SRK
Clash
Another point on this day is that it is one of
the very few times that Shahrukh Khan actually lost a clash. Shahrukh Khan has
an unbeatable record in clashes as he tends to come out on top most of the time
but on 11th August he had two films Guddu and Oh Darling Yeh Hai India and they
both defeated by the Rishi Kapoor / Nana Patekar starrer Hum Dono which
eventually did fair business due to Mumbai circuit.
Note - Both the Shahrukh Khan
films were films which were taken on before he became a major star with
Baazigar and Darr.
#1995 OCT
Hum
Aapke Hain Hain grossed £1.05 million in United Kingdom. After £1 million being
breached it was not long that £1.5 million came along as Dilwale Dulhania Le
Jayenge (1995) crossed the mark the very next year. It was
the landmark film which made Shahrukh Khan a huge megastar in United
Kingdom and overseas. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge grossed £1.58 million in
United Kingdom.
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is till
today the biggest BLOCKBUSTER from the YRF banner with nearly 5 crore
footfalls. It also was the first film from YRF to score in the East as till
that time all the YRF films be it their biggest HITS like Daag (1973), Kabhi
Kabhie (1976) or Darr (1993) could never really perform in the Eastern circuit
(West Bengal, Bihar, Assam and Odisha).
In Overseas it created history by
collected almost $5 million and this was at a time when $500k was regarded as a
huge total though obviously things changed post Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.
The mega stardom will never come from
a biopic though as the actor is unable to leave his stamp on the character like
a Shahrukh Khan did in DDLJ or Salman Khan in Dabangg.
Action has dominated the box office
since the release of Mera Gaon Mera Desh in June 1971 till today and in those
47 years only Shahrukh Khan managed to create a huge fan following without an
action image.
#1997 FEB
Judwaa v Judwaa 2 Comparision - 21 Years On
The film was also the film which gave the career of Salman Khan a major lift as although he had much bigger Hits than Judwaa before they were either two hero films like Saajan, Karan Arjun and Jeet or ensemble cast ones like Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Sanam Bewafa where the supporting artistes have major roles.
This Criteria for TOP ACTOR /
ACTRESS
in the DOWN THE YEAR SECTION is as follow
Here everything is taken into account to show the actual popularity. It takes into account the box-office as well as other factors like, genre, the makers, the setup, release period, the real effect of that film on a career and everything else contributing to the position of an artist. The point system works on a yearly basis and a film released towards the end of the year will be effective in the following year. There will be a years when an artist will be down
on points despite openings and success but this will be because the system will see the year not as strong as the previous unless the build up to a big year is strong. This is basically our system showing how popular an artiste was and when. There are more artistes tracked and if success is consistent for years they will show up on the charts.
An artiste is tracked when they meet with box-office stardom and until they phase out. A popular artiste may not have releases but the stardom does not fall away overnight so there will be people in the charts despite no releases.
An actor going below 500 is seen as phase out and the the actress level is 350. Only 30 years maximum will be applied as nobody lasts that long as a real box office star. The same methods are applied to actors and actresses and in some years it could mean an actress having as much or even more popularity than an actor.

In 2009 came Wanted which was not a huge hit but created this action star image for Salman Khan who until then was more of a romantic hero. He consolidated this image with films like Dabangg and Bodyguard and there was no looking back. These film were not the biggest blockbusters of the career of Salman Khan but created an image where the huge openings materialized which was not the case with some of the earlier bigger hits.

YOU ASKET IT
Q.1 How comes on your top
actors down the years topic, you haven't put Salman khan for 1994 and 1990,
were he had ATBB hits maine pyar kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun?
A. The trade gives rankings by
judging the Stars contribution to a hit and how much a stars film can generate
when it is sold. Salman is there in 2001 but he had no major big hit that year
but he still had a strong fan following, in 1990 or 1994 his fan following was
not that strong, there was no consistency and No initial without other Major Star.
Q.2 Would you say SRK made Yashraj and Dharma productions or is it the other
way around.
A. Many may say that Yashraj
was established before SRK but that is wrong. Yash Chopra was a major director
but his banner was not a major force because all it had was small success like
Kabhi Kabhie and Chandni behind it but Darr, DDLJ and DTPH changed all that.
Q.3 In the early 90's we had changing No.1's but since 1994 it has been
SRK, why?
Ans. SRK showed tremendous
consistency at box office.
Q.4 Which is the biggest HIT
ever for Yashraj Films & Dharma?
A. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge
for Yashraj & Kuch Kuch Hota Hai for Dharma.
Q.5 Who was the biggest
Director Of 90s ?
A. David Dhawan & Sooraj
Barjatiya.
Q.6 Hi, Could u tell the top 5
actress of 90s?
A. (1) Madhuri Dixit (2)
Karisma Kapoor (3) Juhi Chawla (4) Kajol (5) Raveena Tandon
Q.7 Who is the greatest actor
at the box office between Shahrukh Khan Aamir Khan and Salman Khan in there
whole careers?
Ans. There careers have not
finished so that can only be said when they finish bit so far in the last 25
years or so Shahrukh Khan leads as he not really seen a down period since the
early 90's while Aamir Khan and Salman Khan have seen down periods. Today all
three are roughly the same with Salman Khan holding slight edge in the domestic
market if the film is right due to more mass popularity.
Q.8 Which Khan dominated the
box office in the Nineties?
A. If you talking in between
the Khans then it was Shahrukh Khan followed by Salman Khan followed by Aamir
Khan but none of the Khans dominated overall. In early nineties it was Amitabh
Bachchan, in the mid nineties it was Sunny Deol and in the late nineties it was
Shahrukh Khan. Overall the decade belonged to Sunny Deol.
Q.9 Was there
a time when Ajay Devgn was bigger than the Khans?
A. Yes around the early
nineties he was bigger than Salman Khan and Aamir Khan as his films like Jigar,
Divyashakti, Vijaypath took better openings than the Khan films. Shahrukh Khan
started later but became a bigger star with Baazigar and Darr.
Q.10 Can you list the biggest
disaster of the Khans and Akshay Kumar because there are many of them and its
always about the blockbusters and not the disasters which make for a more
interesting read as some were the biggest disasters ever. Also the clashes they
lost.
A. These will be
generally in the a long time back in the 90's before these actors were big box
office draws. Shahrukh Khan does not have many huge disasters as he became a
box office force very early in his career but others do have due to bad films
in their career early and the box office clout in terms of
initial coming in the middle of their respective careers. Once the
database hits 88-89 then maybe some articles can be done especially on the clashes
side as todays big guns were taken out by the sort of names which would be
unbelievable and sometimes with major releases.
Q. It is always said on the
website that the Salman Khan stardom started with Dabangg in 2010 but he
had Hum Aapke Hain Kaun in 1994 and there were many other hits at that time
also so the stardom did not really start with Dabangg.
A. There are many stars
in the industry but it does not mean box office super stardom as this happens
to very few. It’s not only just box office numbers because as you pointed there
was Hum Aapke Hain Koun which is far bigger HIT than Dabangg and the biggest
HIT in a generation. A male star has to do something in a film where the
audience takes to him in the big way and for Salman Khan it happened with
Dabangg and not Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. It was not only Dabangg as one film cant
lead to such super stardom but others like Bodyguard and Ek Tha Tiger which
helped cement the audience from where there was no looking back. A similar
scenario took place with Shahrukh Khan in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Sunny
Deol in Ghayal and again these films started the craze but it was the films
after which cemented the super stardom. You can have the biggest HITS but what
you do in the film has to be a craze and that makes the big difference as many
actors have give huge hits over the last 100 years but only 7 Actors are really
big box office stars.
