Star Positions 2023 - Female Leads

The box office has been back for two years now and now enough films have been released to get an idea of star positions post the pandemic. As far as female leads go Alia Bhatt is the undisputed number one being the main force driving for the success of Gangubai Kathiawadi Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani. She is probably the only female star who is a a box office draw and can carry a film alone.

The box office numbers of films featuring Alia Bhatt have always been better in Mumbai city and Pune even when the content is more of a North type of film like 2 States or Raazi and this has continued with Gangubai Kathiawadi and Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani so when a heroine has a few places always outperforming it really helps at the box office though it will tougher ahead as these two centres are very unpredictable at the moment.

There are probably three other female leads that can be called stars today and they are Deepika Padukone, Kiara Advani and Shraddha Kapoor. So the ranking today is as follows and its difficult to put someone in fifth place as either no one is able to make much of an impact or other female leads don't hold the same value as before.

There was a time when Deepika Padukone was well clear of the field but there were not many films towards the end of the last decade just before the pandemic and the attempts to succeed in films where the female lead is the driver did not work like Finding Fanny and Chhapaak. The last named was a huge downer just before the pandemic but Pathaan came post the pandemic and it probably undid some of the Chhapaak damage which was a mistake of epic proportions for a heroine like Deepika Padukone..

Kiara Advani had made huge strides just before the pandemic with films like Kabir Singh and Good Newwz and even in the pandemic had a blockbuster song Burj Khalifa and Laxmii (2020) which is probably still the only genuine HIT to be premiered on digital. The run continues post the pandemic and at the moment is that quintessential Hindi film heroine who fits well into all genres and is also able to pair up with most the leading male stars. In popularity with the youth she could actually be ahead of Deepika Padukone at this point of time.

Shraddha Kapoor is the fourth genuine female star today and actually should probably being doing better but there are so few films and this just not the case over the last few years but even now post pandemic it will be only two releases in around four years with Tu Jhooti Main Makkaar and Stree 2. The popularity is there but films have to come to prove this.

After these four it would probably be names like Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Disha Patani. Katrina Kaif had Tiger 3 which did well and that is the zone she fits into well but there are very few films made like that. But the issue its difficult to slot her into that so called female content film zone unless its action genre but those films are also very less if any.

Kareena Kapoor has had Lal Singh Chadda and a television film but has face value and the talent still to work at the box office given the right film but obviously too many television films will dilute the equity as far as theatrical value is concerned which will only make box office success harder especially in a female led film.

Kriti Sanon was on a upward curve before the pandemic hit and just behind Alia Bhatt and Kiara Advani as far as the girls who made an entry in the last decade were concerned but post pandemic the audience has not been that kind with major duds and now its about whether this trend can reverse with the right films.

Disha Patani is similar to Shraddha Kapoor with so little work. There is some credit to go to her for the initial of Ek Villain 2 so there is some popularity there but again you need back to back films to reach that genuine star status.

Generally there is dearth of popular heroines for the youth hero / heroine film as Alia maybe has become too big for this zone, Deepika will not pair well with the younger actors while Shraddha hardly does films leaving Kiara but with her run at the box office she will probably have the choice of the bigger films and there are four female stars who actually make a difference.

This makes it even more difficult to make that medium budget comedy./ action / love story as the younger male stars have not hit huge heights at the box office so you need a pairing with a popular heroine to make it a package to get that initial audience out but those heroines are limited in supply.

Alia Bhatt Topples Deepika Padukone To Be Number One

The first five months have been pretty good at the box office though external factors are helping a bit with huge growth of NETT ticket rates as compared to last year due to GST and a film like Padmaavat which was held over from last year. If the box office has been good to the industry so far this year there have been two major changes in the star equation.

The first was Tiger Shroff becoming a real action star with a box office draw with Baaghi 2. The second is Alia Bhatt becoming the number one heroine with Raazi and taking over from Deepika Padukone.

This can be read in two ways, one is that Deepika Padukone was the number one heroine by default over the last 2 years as there were hardly any releases. The other way is that Alia Bhatt has become number one by default as the only other heroine who has similar popularity is not really there so eventually with the consistent HITS and this huge heroine orientated HIT Raazi the equation had to change.

It can be argued that Padmaavat was there early this year but no matter how much PR is done by each of the actors to put a claim on the success, the industry is far too clever for that today. Basically Sanjay Leela Bhansali surpassed himself and gave a film which actually held big appeal outside Maharashtra and Gujarat and then there was this external factor of this Karni Sena gang who can actually claim the most credit for the huge success of Padmaavat. They managed to create the sort of hype for a film that no actor, song or trailer in the history of Hindi cinema (maybe Indian cinema) has ever been able to do.

Deepika Padukone become the top heroine with films like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Chennai Express and it has lasted for around five years though last two few years there has not been much outside Bhansali films where the huge budget and canvas helps. Tamasha tanked badly and the Hollywood release XXX - Return Of Xander Cage flopped in India and was a disaster in USA. It may have done well in China but many Hollywood duds do well there and it is irrelevant as far as stardom in Hollywood is concerned because the domestic market is a must. So the Hollywood exercise becomes futile as the film fares badly in North America. Alia Bhatt has been hugely consistent and now culminated with a huge heroine orientated HIT Raazi which turns the tables.

The huge numbers may still be difficult as the age factor makes it difficult for Alia Bhatt to pair with the Khans and the huge budgets will not be there without them but as the likes of Ranbir Kapoor and Varun Dhawan grow as stars that will allow Alia Bhatt to be paired with them in bigger budget films. But this cant take away that as a sole entity she is the biggest female star today in terms of popularity and with age on her side should continue to reign for some time unless choices are bad and there will be some.

Deepika Padukone went the Aamir Khan way by limiting the releases and coming after years. But there is a huge difference as Aamir Khan experienced a time with multiple releases a year and they failed badly and probably found out this can only be done if he establishes an image which could have been difficult so went to limited exposure in terms of films which has worked well for him since. Deepika Padukone became the top star with multiple films like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Chennai Express and Race 2 but then went the other way from what had worked well. Also Aamir Khan can do it as a history says a hero has a prolonged career and less work can help you last longer and was also not in a lofty position at that time from where you can go down like Deepika Padukone. But for a heroine its a more limited career and you cant afford to be out of sight for a couple of years as someone will come and go ahead and this is what has happened here.

The top five actresses as of now are as follows and if a challenge for Alia Bhatt comes it will probably come from a newer face as compared to others in the list below.

Sridevi - A Very Rare Female Star

The word STAR is a pretty misused word today due to the paparazzi as the need to put out information and pictures everybody appearing in films and television is a star. But what is a real star? Our reading of it is that it is someone who is liked by enough of the film going audience that makes the audience want to watch them.

The audience is prepared to pay and give their time and this what separates the real stars from paparazzi stars. The former will be very few while the latter will be in huge numbers. Now lets look at the scenario today we have possibly 4-5 genuine box office stars (all male) and then possibly another 7-8 stars (male and female). Now with such limited genuine stars it means the media has to create stars for their needs as the amount of time they have to give to entertainment news cannot be sustained by 11 or 12 people.

The demise of Sridevi has been all over the news lately and as you take a look at the filmography and the numbers then it comes out she was a very rare female star. We have not created a genuine male box office star in the last fifteen years or more so it would take some doing by a female to achieve that status. But Sridevi was one of the four genuine female box office stars that the Hindi film industry has created, someone who really mattered at the box office as a sole entity. Basically in the same bracket as the Khans are today. This is actually unthinkable today that a female star can reach that level today but you can never say never as its happened before. Blockbusters of the proportions of Bahubali - the Conclusion were there in the past but was unthinkable today but it happenned.

Below are the four female box stars that the industry has seen over the last 75 years or so. The period of box office domination is in brackets.

Mumtaz (1970-1974) - The first female star to have real box office clout. The blockbusters came with superstar Rajesh Khanna but the actors who were not doing well like Sanjeev Kumar (Khilona), Sanjay Khan (Mela) and Feroz Khan (Mela, Apradh) got big hits because of her popularity. Many newcomers got paired with Mumtaz as distributors picked up films on her name and one of these newcomers was even future superstar Amitabh Bachchan in Bandhe Haath. Due to the super hit heroine this film fetched a higher price than Zanjeer, the film which made Amitabh Bachchan a star. Rajesh Khanna lost super stardom in late 72 to early 73 but the films with Mumtaz still worked like Roti, Aap Ki Kasam and Prem Kahani in 74-75.

Hema Malini: (1973 - 1982) - The Mumtaz phase did not last long within the industry as she decided to quit the industry and stopped signing films. Though in the audience eyes Mumtaz remained a huge star till 1974 as her films released, it was over within the industry in 1972 and the biggest benficiary was Hema Malini as many of the rejected Mumtaz films went to her including Seeta Aur Geeta. Hema Malini then probably went on to emerge the biggest female star ever. If the Mumtaz blockbusters came with early 70's superstar Rajesh Khanna then the Hema Malini blockbusters came with the mid 70's superstar Dharmendra including the biggest of them all Sholay and 15 odd other 200 crore nett plus grossers (todays rates). She even gave the fading stars like Rajendra Kumar (Gora Aur Kala) and Dev Anand (Amir Garib) huge hits. The blockbusters continued into the 80's like Kranti and Naseeb and although these were multistarrers, Hema Malini had a huge presence in these films despite the galaxy of stars in them.

Sridevi (1984 - 1992) - Sridevi became a huge star in 1983 with Himmatwala which was a huge hit and at that time there was a vacant top spot and she had grabbed it in no time. Himmatwala is said to be released in the same week of her death but the film was actually released on 4th February in Delhi / UP and East Punjab and clashed with a bigger star cast film Taqdeer (Shatrughan Sinha, Hema Malini, Zeenat Aman and Mithun Chakraborty) and did not do well with the bigger film out grossing it but later on Himmatwala emerged a huge hit. The hits flowed with Justice Chaudhary, Mawaali, Maqsad and Tohfa. Then like Mumtaz and Hema Malini earlier she carried many heroes in films like Nagina, Mr India and Chandni all which did very well especially Nagina which was a huge blockbuster. There was a film called Guru which had Mithun Chakraborty at his peak in the title role but it was Sridevi who was in the double role. This is like the heroine having a double role in Salman Khan's Sultan. The numbers of Sridevi may not have been high as Mumtaz or Hema Malini but this was also a bad phase (almost as bad as today) in the industry as video had taken over and footfalls had dwindled.

Madhuri Dixit: (1990 - 1995) - Madhuri Dixit is the last female box office star the film industry has seen. Tezaab made her a huge star after a few years of struggle and the success of Tezaab was consolidated in a month with an even bigger blockbuster Ram Lakhan. But at this point of time Sridevi was the reigning star and in a big way and it was films like Dil, Saajan and Beta which made Madhuri Dixit that box office star. Dil had Aamir Khan but it became a Madhuri Dixit film, coincidentally the first four big hits of Aamir Khan (Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Dil, Rangeela and Raja Hindustani) all propelled the heroines as they took the credit. Saajan had Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan while Beta had Anil Kapoor but generally it was Madhuri Dixit leading the way in these films. Even Shahrukh Khan played second fiddle to Madhuri Dixit in Anjaam but Shahrukh Khan was on a crest of a wave at the time and the audience could not accept him as an outright villain and the film was rejected. Then came the peak with Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Raja and it could be that no heroine had ever reached this level but to live up to these box office expectations would have been difficult even for a huge male star and the downfall started.

After these huge female stars there has been Karisma Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai, Rani Mukherjee, Preity Zinta, Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone who at a given point of time have been number one heroines but generally not at a level where they can compete with the top male leads of the time. The next to test this will be Alia Bhatt and here it could be that she challenges the heroes of her generation but will those heroes be real box office stars.

Top Actresses In The Popularity Stakes

The male star stakes have seen little changes in the last few years with the same names dominating the top places but its a different story as far as female leads are concerned as younger actresses like Alia Bhatt and Shraddha Kapoor have made fast inroads despite not being paired in big films with the reigning Khans. They are the most in demand actresses in the industry at the moment. Deepika Padukone still retains top spot but the peak was Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Chennai Express and its not been the same since which huge flops like Finding Fanny and Tamasha and then there is a Bajirao Mastani where the second lead steals the show for many.

The only star who gets any mileage from a limited appreciation film like Kapoor & Sons is Alia Bhatt. In Udta Punjab, a more senior Kareena Kapoor is playing single fiddle which is another signal of the fast rise. Its a similar story for Shraddha Kapoor as a huge share in the successs of films like Aashiqui 2, Ek Villain, ABCD 2 and Baaghi, in fact barring ABCD 2 it can be said the bulk of the credit for the other films is going her way. This rise has also coincided with reigning stars like Katrina Kaif having a very bad phase with big duds like Fitoor and Baar Baar Dekho and it remains to be seen if this downward trend can be altered. Pay Disparity In Industry - Top Ten Actress Initials

The opening of Phillauri is another proof how female centric films struggle for a start at the box office. Phillauri grossed 3.50-3.75 crore nett apprx on its opening day and This Figure also came because of the presence Diljit Dosanjh. East Punjab circuit did huge business, if it was a normal East Punjab the film would not have even collected 3 crore nett.

Only two films Mary Kom (Priyanka Chopra) and Heroine (Kareena Kapoor) have crossed the 5 crore nett mark. The initial of these films was also not good when released but they look much better now compared to what has happened after. Heroine was 2012 and Mary Kom 2014 but with higher ticket rates the numbers of these films are not being reached.

There is always news of disparity in pay between actors and actresses in the film industry but actually its not as bad as what happens in other industries. In other places, even results may not change the disparity but in the industry results will change all. If in the list below there were films which were taking in 12 or 15 crore nett on day one, there would not be this talk of disparity. The main reason given for the disparity is the chauvinistic ways of the industry and in some ways there is chauvinistic behavior in the industry but the pay disparity is basically because of the results below. If the numbers below change, the pay disparity will also change.

Some of these films eventually put up decent lifetime numbers but that will not change the disparity in pay, it will be the opening day numbers. There is no film going close to 10 crore nett (taking real Mary Kom value) and 10 crore today is not really a good start unless its under 1500 screens. If the opening day numbers start coming in double digits then the pay cheques can also be double digits but until then its going to be a 5-6 crore cheque on a good case for actresses in the Hindi film industry.

Those Days are long gone when Actresses like Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit, Karisma Kapoor emerged Number One position without working with Top Stars of that time. Today no actress can actually emerge big star without working with Big Male Super Stars. We have seen this in last 10 Years be it Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone or Anushka Sharma.

Below are the top opening days for films with actresses as the main face value of the film. The list does not include films where the USP is sex or horror as its the genre at work there. Also does not include ensemble cast films like The Dirty Picture or Tanu Weds Manu Returns which have other known faces.

The biggest female stars of the day Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone do not have any films in the above list but if you look at the numbers of their films which were not exactly driven totally by the them as had other faces but are pretty close then they don't make good reading also. Fitoor released earlier this year had a opening day of 3.43 crore nett and Finding Fanny had 4.23 crore nett in 2014. Even putting in Piku for arguments sake makes no difference as it opened to 5.17 crore nett.

The point systen works on a yearly basis and a film released towards the end of the year

will be effectibve in the following year. There will be a years when an artist will be down

on points despite openings and success but this will be becasue the system will see the year

not as strong as the previous unless the build up to a big year is strong.

This is basically our system showing how popular an artsite was and when.

There are more artistes tracked and if success is consistent for years they will show up on the charts.

An artiste is tracked when they meet with boxoffice stardom and until they phase out.

A popular artiste may not have releases but the stardom does not fall away overnight

so there will be people in the charts despite no releases.

An actor going below 500 is seen as phase out and the the actress level is 350.

Only 30 years maximum will be applied as nobody lasts that long as a real box office star.

The same methods are applied to actors and actresses and in some years it could mean

an actress having as much or even more popularity than an actor.
