Top Ten Female Lead Driven Opening Days - Kareena Alia Dominate

Crew is the third highest opening ever as far as female lead driven films go only behind Veere Di Wedding and Gangubai Kathiawadi though final numbers can take it above Gangubai Kathaiwadi also. It is a holiday which has pushed the film to the levels of Gangubai Kathiawadi but even without that it would have been in the top ten.

The top ten list is dominated by films of Kareena Kapoor and Alia Bhatt who are probably the biggest female stars of the past two decades or so. There is also Heroine (Kareena Kapoor) sitting on 11th place. Crew is an ensemble cast with other female stars like Tabu and Kriti Sanon so its a package but Kareena Kapoor is the main driving force as far as box office goes. There is only one double digit film and that is also a Kareena Kapoor starrer Veere Di Wedding.

There have been five heroines in the Hindi film industry who would be in the all time great list and were undisputed in their times and they are Vyjayanthimala, Mumtaz, Hema Malini, Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit and post this opening of Crew Kareena Kapoor joins the list. Maybe the level of success is not as high as the other names above but the longevity makes up for that. If the success ratio of Alia Bhatt keeps up over the next few years her name will also be up there with the all time greats making it seven heroines.

The opening of the film is also boost the films featuring the heroines as central leads as today most of the top female stars want roles which makes it tough to get a top male star and a top female star in the same film catering to the mass audience as it will be male dominated.

The problem occurs that today films post pandemic have to cater to a wider audience to get an initial so have to be more commercial and cinematic which is tougher with females. It leads the heroines towards action and they play avenging angels or spy agents and basically become the heroes. But the fact remains that heroines become stars due to their songs and glamour but this all goes out of the window in an action / thriller film.

Obviously its action which is going to take these opening numbers higher but how do you do it retaining the essence of the Hindi film heroine with songs and glamour as presenting the heroine like a male will not cut it with the wider audience. The top ten opening days for heroine led films are as follows.

1. Veere Di Wedding - 10,42,00,000 (Kareena Kapoor)

2. Gangubai Kathiawadi - 9,62,00,000  (Alia Bhatt)

3. Crew - 9,50,00,000 apprx (Kareena Kapoor) (Holiday)

4. Dear Zindagi - 8,62,00,000 (Alia Bhatt)

5. Tanu Weds Manu Returns - 8,61,00,000 (Kangana Ranuat)

6. Mary Kom - 8,32,00,000 (Priyanka Chopra)

7. Ragini MMS 2 - 7,93,00,000 (Sunny Leone)

8. Manikarnika - Queen Of Jhansi - 7,66,00,000 (Kangana Ranaut)

9. Jism 2 - 7,46,00,000 (Sunny Leone)

10. Raazi - 7,33,00,000 (Alia Bhatt)

Baywatch Beats XXX In United States

There have two hugely hyped Hollywood films (Baywatch and XXX - Return Of Xander Cage) in India due to the presence of mainstream Hindi film heroines and both have flopped badly. Baywatch is a disaster in India while XXX - Return Of Xander Cage is a flop but when you talk about Hollywood films its not about what happens in India but about the States. Just like for a Hindi film its about India and not US or UK.

The picture across the world is similar to India but in US / Canada for whom both are actually B grade films it will be Baywatch which will actually do better. The business of the two films in US / Canada is as follows

Budget
XXX - Return Of Xander Cage - $85 million
Baywatch - $69 million

US / Canada (Domestic Market)
XXX - Return Of Xander Cage - $44.90 million
Baywatch - $56.76 million

Baywatch has also done better in the other traditional western market of United Kingdom as it notched up £4.63 million in just 3 days while the lifetime business of XXX - Return Of Xander Cage was just £3.68 million.

Rewind - Ranbir Kapoor V Salman Khan Box Office Clash

Salman Khan and Ranbir Kapoor have clashed once in history at the box office.
The clash happened way back in 2008.
God Tussi Great Ho was expected to do better before release.

Bachna Ae Haseeno was ahead from day one with more than double margin.
And it was shocking for the trade because end result can be anything
considering word of mouth but Bigger stars always takes more initial.
The Initial of this film can give you actual idea of Salman Khan Star Power
at that time.

Bachna Ae Haseeno remained ahead through the run and finished
with 36.19 crore nett almost three times more than God Tussi Great Ho 12.51cr.
Bachna Ae Haseeno also managed to fare much better in Overseas
despite God Tussi Great Ho having more Overseas Screens.

Top Actresses In The Popularity Stakes

The male star stakes have seen little changes in the last few years with the same names dominating the top places but its a different story as far as female leads are concerned as younger actresses like Alia Bhatt and Shraddha Kapoor have made fast inroads despite not being paired in big films with the reigning Khans. They are the most in demand actresses in the industry at the moment. Deepika Padukone still retains top spot but the peak was Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Chennai Express and its not been the same since which huge flops like Finding Fanny and Tamasha and then there is a Bajirao Mastani where the second lead steals the show for many.

The only star who gets any mileage from a limited appreciation film like Kapoor & Sons is Alia Bhatt. In Udta Punjab, a more senior Kareena Kapoor is playing single fiddle which is another signal of the fast rise. Its a similar story for Shraddha Kapoor as a huge share in the successs of films like Aashiqui 2, Ek Villain,  ABCD 2 and Baaghi, in fact barring ABCD 2 it can be said the bulk of the credit for the other films is going her way. This rise has also coincided with reigning stars like Katrina Kaif having a very bad phase with big duds like Fitoor and Baar Baar Dekho and it remains to be seen if this downward trend can be altered. The top ten female leads in terms of the popularity stakes at present are as follows.

1. Deepika Padukone
2. Alia Bhatt
3. Shraddha Kapoor
4. Katrina Kaif
5. Anushka Sharma
6. Kareena Kapoor
7. Priyanka Chopra
8. Sonakshi Sinha
9. Kangana Ranaut
10. Parineeti Chopra

The Alternative HITS - Barfi TOP

There is a different type of Hit brewing in the Hindi film industry lately. These films dont find much appreciation across the country but find huge appreciation concentrated at handfull of centres and most of these centres are the biggest in the country. The average ticket price in these centres is now high enough to get a hit even though footfalls are not high though of course the cost of these films also has to be under 50 crore, prefrebaly 25-35 crore to be a Hit though 50 crore can also be recovered.

Barfi the biggest hit out of these went to another level and even crossed 100 crore nett though that was through clever distribution which would have added 8-10 crore. Still the film going that far was a bit of fluke and this won't be repeated very often. It could have also been due to the presence of a star like Ranbir Kapoor but normally these types dont really work with the target audience with starcasts and examples are many from Haider to Bombay Velvet to Dil Dhadakne Do to Baar Baar Dekho. Below are a list of HIT films (only HITS listed) which have a 90% apprx contribution from multiplexes and around 60-65% business is coming from Mumbai and Suburbs, Pune, Delhi NCR / Chandigarh, Hyderbad, Bangalore and Kolkata. .

1. Barfi - 1,06,14,00,000
2. Piku - 77,78,00,000
3. Kapoor & Sons - 71,17,00,000
4. Neerja - 69,91,00,000
5. Pink - 63,83,00,000
6. Queen - 56,38,00,000
7. Kahaani - 53,74,00,000
8. Badlapur - 49,62,00,000
9. Kai Po Che - 48,58,00,000
10. Vicky Donor - 37,31,00,000

What is also common with all these films is that they only have a life as long as they are on the theatres as all were disasters on televisions.
This is because of no all India appreciation and the little audience which does appreciate have seen them in the theatres.

Pay Disparity In Industry - Top Ten Actress Initials

The opening of Phillauri is another proof how female centric films struggle for a start at the box office. Phillauri grossed 3.50-3.75 crore nett apprx on its opening day and This Figure also came because of the presence Diljit Dosanjh. East Punjab circuit did huge business, if it was a normal East Punjab the film would not have even collected 3 crore nett.

Only two films Mary Kom (Priyanka Chopra) and Heroine (Kareena Kapoor) have crossed the 5 crore nett mark. The initial of these films was also not good when released but they look much better now compared to what has happened after. Heroine was 2012 and Mary Kom 2014 but with higher ticket rates the numbers of these films are not being reached.

There is always news of disparity in pay between actors and actresses in the film industry but actually its not as bad as what happens in other industries. In other places, even results may not change the disparity but in the industry results will change all. If in the list below there were films which were taking in 12 or 15 crore nett on day one, there would not be this talk of disparity. The main reason given for the disparity is the chauvinistic ways of the industry and in some ways there is chauvinistic behavior in the industry but the pay disparity is basically because of the results below. If the numbers below change, the pay disparity will also change.

Some of these films eventually put up decent lifetime numbers but that will not change the disparity in pay, it will be the opening day numbers. There is no film going close to 10 crore nett (taking real Mary Kom value) and 10 crore today is not really a good start unless its under 1500 screens. If the opening day numbers start coming in double digits then the pay cheques can also be double digits but until then its going to be a 5-6 crore cheque on a good case for actresses in the Hindi film industry.

Those Days are long gone when Actresses like Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit, Karisma Kapoor emerged Number One position without working with Top Stars of that time. Today no actress can actually emerge big star without working with Big Male Super Stars. We have seen this in last 10 Years be it Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone or Anushka Sharma.

Below are the top opening days for films with actresses as the main face value of the film. The list does not include films where the USP is sex or horror as its the genre at work there. Also does not include ensemble cast films like The Dirty Picture or Tanu Weds Manu Returns which have other known faces.

1. Mary Kom  - 8,32,00,000

2. Heroine - 6,82,00,000

3. Jai Gangaajal - 4,45,00,000

4. Akira - 4,30,00,000

5. Jazbaa - 4,23,00,000

6. Neerja - 4,13,60,000

7. Phillauri - 3,60,00,000 (Approx)

8. Highway - 3,47,00,000

9. Mardaani - 3,40,00,000

10. No One Killed Jessca - 3,22,00,000

Note - Mary Kom was tax free in Maharashtra on release and and adjusting the figure would give 7.43 crore as a value for the nett number. It still remains on top but with a lower gap between Heroine.

The biggest female stars of the day Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone do not have any films in the above list but if you look at the numbers of their films which were not exactly driven totally by the them as had other faces but are pretty close then they don't make good reading also. Fitoor released earlier this year had a opening day of 3.43 crore nett and Finding Fanny had 4.23 crore nett in 2014. Even putting in Piku for arguments sake makes no difference as it opened to 5.17 crore nett.
