Kabali (2016) Boxoffice

Kabali is the second highest grossing film in the history of Tamil cinema few crores short of Rajnikan'ts own Enthiran (Robot In Hindi). That film had grossed around 196.84 crore nett across India with Tamil version doing 120 crore nett, Telugu version doing 53 crore nett and Hindi version grossing 23.84 crore nett.

Despite being the second biggest grosser ever in the Tamil Film industry the profits will not there as it fetched 132 crore from distributors across India for the various circuits. But this is mainly to do with the distributors paying a premium due to Rajnikant.

Kabali underperformed badly in its Hindi and Telugu versions but the Tamil one is HIT especially in Tamil Nadu. The Hindi version and Telugu version will not recover their costs from the distributors. The picture is different in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala where it will cover or go above the crazy prices paid for the film.

The business of the film across India in all versions was around 145 crore nett in the first week and 174.67 crore nett after second week. The lifetime business of Enthiran was 196.84 crore nett which is the highest grossing Tamil film across India and this is little short at 190 crore because of the business in Nizam / Andhra. In the local market Tamil Nadu, Kabali is the highest grossing Tamil film. In Nizam / Andhra, Einthiran (Robo) had grossed a huge 55 crore nett while Kabali grossed around 35 crore nett.

Top Openings India - All Films All Languages

When regional films come into play they have to be compared in GROSS as this is the number collected at the box office which gets distorted with different rates of Entertainment Tax across India. A Tamil film is tax free in Tamil Nadu where most of its revenue comes from while Hindi films have a huge tax of 65% in UP. Also Entertainment Tax is lower generally in the South.

Below are the top fifteen opening day grossers in India. The list includes all films released in India and all figures are GROSS (this is because there are different taxes and while Hindi film variance between NETT and GROSS will be 1-3%, it is much more when compared with South films due to lower taxes). Also all languages included for all films.

It has to be noted what Kabali and Bahubali have done is get the figures on a non holiday while most of the above Hindi films are holiday releases. Not that Kabali or Bahubali would have done much more if released on holiday as they are doing close to capacity on a non holiday.

Basically the occupancy of Kabali and Bahubali is higher than what the biggest Hindi films have done on a national holiday. Kabali just ran riot in South India just on the name of Rajnikant as hit or flop the superstar just gets bigger and bigger.

Shahrukh Khan film Happy New Year which started this 50 crore GBOC on opening day benchmark. This was followed by Salman Khan and then the biggest of them all Raknikant. This 50 crore figure is the one for any star who has any box office clout and so far only the Three Biggest Stars in India have managed it.

Kabali Smashes All Indian Film Records Overseas

The Tamil language film Kabali has smashed all weekend records for a film from India. The previous record was held by Dhoom at $10.32 million but Kabali has gone through that comfortably. The film has grossed $4.05 million is US / Canada which is in four days but for comparison the three day figure of $3.51 million is taken. This is the second highest figure ever in US / Canada after PK which was slightly better at $3.55 million.

The film has grossed a further $3.75 million in the Far East which includes Malaysia, Singapore and Philippines over four days as Malaysia and Singapore see unbelievable numbers though this was probably expected as it fetched a higher price for Malaysia than US / Canada. The three day figures is $3.50 million for Far East. The Gulf has grossed $2 million which gives the film a total of $9 million three day figure and there is still Europe, Oceania, Africa and parts of Middle East to come. United Kingdom will be around $400,000 over three days..

The film has also broken all records in Sri Lanka where day one was similar to the lifetime of Dilwale which scored big there. The three day figure for the film will close around the $10.57 million mark (INR 71 crore)and if we take four day figure it will probably be a $12.15 million weekend (INR 81.5 crore).

The $10.57 million three day weekend beats Dhoom 3, Dilwale, Sultan. It is the second film after Dhoom 3 to cross $10 million in three days but that was a Christmas release which is the best period in Overseas and Kabali has been released on a normal period.

The Hindi version Robot managed Average business in circuits like Mumbai and CP Berar but flopped in Delhi, Punjab and Bengal.
