Top Openings India - All Films All Languages

When regional films come into play they have to be compared in GROSS as this is the number collected at the box office which gets distorted with different rates of Entertainment Tax across India. A Tamil film is tax free in Tamil Nadu where most of its revenue comes from while Hindi films have a huge tax of 65% in UP. Also Entertainment Tax is lower generally in the South.

Below are the top fifteen opening day grossers in India. The list includes all films released in India and all figures are GROSS (this is because there are different taxes and while Hindi film variance between NETT and GROSS will be 1-3%, it is much more when compared with South films due to lower taxes). Also all languages included for all films.

2. Kabali - 53.96 crore
3. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo - 53.24 crore
4. Sultan - 50.31 crore
5. Bahubali - 49.48 crore
6. Singham Returns - 43.63 crore
7. Dhoom 3 - 42.10 crore
8. Chennai Express - 41.87 crore
9. Khaidi No.150 - 41.75 crore
10. Dangal - 41.33 crore
11. Ek Tha Tiger - 40.94 crore
12. Sardaar Gabbar Singh - 37.10 crore
13. Janatha Garage - 36.48 crore
14. Bajrangi Bhaijaan - 36.42 crore
15. PK - 33.32 crore

It has to be noted what Kabali and Bahubali have done is get the figures on a non holiday while most of the above Hindi films are holiday releases. Not that Kabali or Bahubali would have done much more if released on holiday as they are doing close to capacity on a non holiday.

Basically the occupancy of Kabali and Bahubali is higher than what the biggest Hindi films have done on a national holiday. Kabali just ran riot in South India just on the name of Rajnikant as hit or flop the superstar just gets bigger and bigger.

Shahrukh Khan film Happy New Year which started this 50 crore GBOC on opening day benchmark. This was followed by Salman Khan and then the biggest of them all Raknikant. This 50 crore figure is the one for any star who has any box office clout and so far only the Three Biggest Stars in India have managed it.

BIG BOX OFFICE NUMBERS ARE ALL ABOUT SOLO HOLIDAYS TODAY

Big box office numbers are all about solo holidays releases today and this was again proven by Sultan.

There was a time when films like Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, Gadar, Devdas, Koi Mil Gaya, Veer Zaara & Om Shanti Om released on a non holiday period or on holiday period with clash.They were the biggest grossers in their year of release. Even Dhoom 2 released in November 2006 managed to come out on to top and beat all the major holiday releases of that year but today that is near impossible.

The daily box office takings have grown to such levels that the 40% extra that a major holiday gives to a solo release today is a very big amount. That extra 40% push was also there ten years ago but it amounted to just 25-30 lakhs then and today it is 12-14 crore. A good holiday period can give you push of 50-55 crore over just 3-4 days if released solo.

Basically non holiday releases & clashed releases have no chance of competing with solo holiday releases today as far as box office takings are concerned. The biggest grossers from now are almost certain to be films that release Solo on the major festive holidays and those where the holidays fall on the right days having the edge. Om Shanti Om is likley to turn out to be the last time that a film became the highest grosser of a year without a solo release.

Sultan Sets Record In Its First Week

Sultan set a record for week one as its first week collections went to 206.50 crore nett. On the other hand the film also saw its first noticeable drop on day seven after a huge run as it dropped 15% apprx from the previous day. The collections of Sultan till date are as follows.

Thursday 36,70,00,000
Friday - 30,97,00,000
Saturday - 36,80,00,000
Sunday 37,88,00,000
Monday - 15,41,00,000
Tuesday - 12,75,00,000 apprx

TOTAL - 206.50 crore apprx

The extended first week is going to close at around 228 crore nett and

where it lands on its second Friday will determine its lifetime business.
