Judwaa v Judwaa 2 Comparision - 21 Years On

Judwaa was released 21 years ago and proved to be huge hit in Mumbai and Nizam /Andhra and did well elsewhere.
The film was major release after a long time due to the one month strike in Maharashtra due to high entertainment tax.

The film was also the film which gave the career of Salman Khan a major lift as although he had much bigger Hits than Judwaa before they were either two hero films like Saajan, Karan Arjun and Jeet or ensemble cast ones like Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Sanam Bewafa where the supporting artistes have major roles.

The interesting thing about Judwaa is that box office numbers of Judwaa and Judwaa 2 released last year are so very similar. Not in terms of gross as after 21 years that is impossible but the adjusted numbers and footfalls are so very similar. in another words a similar number of tickets were sold and the business if ticket inflation is factored in, is also similar.

Judwaa (1997) has an adjusted nett gross on 2017 ticket prices of 131.11 crore while Judwaa 2 (2017) grossed 132.4 crore

The footfalls of Judwaa (1997) were 1.36 crore while the footfalls of Judwaa 2 (2017) are 1.30 crore. If we look at the ratios of the biggest circuits than Judwaa (1997) did 34.77% in Mumbai and 19.71% in Delhi / UP while Judwaa 2 (2017) is 27.46% in Mumbai and 24.26% in Delhi / UP.

The film was not a brand when Judwaa 2 released and even when Judwaa 2 became a big hit it could not be called a brand but after what has happened on satellite over the last month or so the film has become a huge brand. The film is the fourth most appreciated film of last year taking into account theatrical and satellite audience. The mega television ensures Judwaa 3 is a sure shot if it is ever made (though not 20 years later like Judwaa 2).

Newcomers Since 1994 - Top Opening Day Collections

Mirziya has opened to very low numbers and this the case with most newcomer films Below is a list of the opening day figures of newcomer films since 1994 where generally the male lead is a newcomer and in some films the pairing itself is being introduced. In the last few years Student Of The Year, Heropanti and Hero (Salman Khan factor) have got what can be called good openings. Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na had a good opening in 2008 (Aamir Khan factor). Saawariya in 2007 also opened well but as it was a clash with Om Shanti Om the figures looked low as the Shahrukh Khan film was almost double.

The last time that newcomer films took a huge start was along time ago. Refugee in 2000 and before that Barsaat in 1995. The former actually broke the opening day record as it was the entry of Amitabh Bachchan's son and the director J.P. Dutta was coming off one the biggest hits of all time Border and this was again a similar type of film and the audience came in hordes to watch initially. Kaho Na... Pyaar Hai took an excellentl in Mumbai circuit. Below are the opening day collections of newcomer films snce 1994. Dilwale V Bajirao Mastani Worldwide Comparison

The Christmas releases have ended their Worldwide runs and are at 380.60 crore for Dilwale and 339.84 crore for Bajirao Mastani.

The India business is better for Bajirao Mastani and the big gap is mainly in Mumbai circuit which is 31.54 crore ahead in terms

of gross box office while across India it has finished 36.93 crore ahead in terms of gross box office.

Dilwale keeps Shahrukh Khan unbelievable clash record intact. He is the star with probbaly the most clashes but comes out on
top every time irrespective of content. The clashes include big victories against rivals Aamir Khan in 1995
(Ram Jaane v Akele Hum Akele Tum) and Salman Khan (Don v Jaan-E-Mann).

In India Dilwale did less business which is seen as a defeat in Indian Media but if the wider picture is seen with Worldwide numbers
its a comfortable victory for Dilwale and this was only due to the clout of Shahrukh Khan as the film was not liked
as to Bajirao Mastani which is hugely appreciated.

The ratings of Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani are below and show
impressions which is basically the number of television sets that viewed the films on their respective premieres.
Dilwale - 67,61,000
Bajirao Mastani - 54,76,000

Another point to note is that Dilwale in the final count has come out ahead of Bajirao Mastani in Worldwide, overseas, television,
music and digital and only down in India theatrical as the film was weak but even there the gap would have been hardly anything
if that intolerance debate did not happen at the time of release which cost the film around 15% business.
It badly affected the film in Punjab, Haryana, UP, MP, Gujarat, Bihar and Maharashtra.
Shahrukh Khan has probably defeated every other major star out there in a clash.
