On This Day: Dil v Ghayal Clash

This day thirty one years back saw Dil and Ghayal release on the same day on 22^nd June 1990 and both films proved to be BLOCKBUSTERS. It was one of the rare occasions that two films released together both emerged BLOCKBUSTERS.

Ghayal was the action film but it was Dil that took the lead at the box office from the first day and it remained that way for the first six months. The music of Dil was huge and it was a youth love story for the mass audience. The business of Dil was better than Ghayal by around 20% in all circuits by the end of 1990 except for CP Berar and the South circuits.

The Ghayal story did not finish in 1990 and went on and on. The film had its first repeat run in Mumbai on 27th September 1991 and the response was earth shattering as despite being one year old the film was competing with new blockbuster films.

Ghayal started to catch Dil up in 1991 with strong repeat runs as Sunny Deol consolidated the action image. The business of Ghayal remained lower than Dil in Delhi / UP and East India but in other circuits it caught up and went ahead. It became the highest grossing film of 1990 in early 1992 as it collected almost 1 crore nett in a huge repeat run in Mumbai circuit.

In this repeat run the film collected more in the first week that the first week of the original run and that too when the first run itself had taken a big start. the second week in this run saw an insane 20% increase in collections as they released more prints. Ghayal is the only film to have such high collections in repeat run in any city in one week (not counting some old films released in colour). The film had the better occupancy than all films released in August, September, October and November in 1991 barring Saudagar and Phool Aur Kaante. The repeat run first week was even better than a big film like Lamhe (10.74 lakhs and 82%).

The numbers for the first week in original run and repeat run in Mumbai city of Ghayal are as follows. The repeat run numbers were simply phenomenal.

Ghayal set records in repeat runs. No film from the nineties was even close to it in repeat runs and only Sholay has higher business in repeat runs in the history of Hindi cinema. Ghayal contiuned to have more repeat runs as the Sunny Deol action image consolidated through the nineties and eventually went to 3.25 crore nett plus in Mumbai which was an extraordinary total.

Dil and Ghayal were huge blockbusters with both films clocking up over 2.50 crore footfalls which is around 300 crore nett plus today in terms of business today. The biggest achievement of Ghayal was that it became an iconic film in time. Ghayal had actual results post release as huge crowds turned up to watch repeat runs of the film whenever it was released.

Madhuri Dixit TRUE BoxOffice Queen (1988-1995)

The word STAR is a pretty misused word today due to the paparazzi as the need to put out information and pictures everybody appearing in films and television is a star. But what is a real star? Our reading of it is that it is someone who is liked by enough of the film going audience that makes the audience want to watch them.

The audience is prepared to pay and give their time and this what separates the real stars from paparazzi stars. The former will be very few while the latter will be in huge numbers.

Madhuri Dixit was one of those rare boxoffice female star between (1988-1995) and Last real female star industry has seen.

We have not created a genuine male box office star in the last fifteen years or more so it would take some doing by a female to achieve that status. But Madhuri Dixit was one of the four genuine female box office stars that the Hindi film industry has created, someone who really mattered at the box office as a sole entity. Basically in the same bracket as the Khans are today.

Madhuri Dixit is the last female box office star the film industry has seen.

Tezaab (1988) made her a huge star after a few years of struggle and the success of Tezaab was consolidated in a month with an even bigger blockbuster Ram Lakhan (1989) after another six months she got another Blockbuster with Tridev.

But at this point of time Sridevi was the reigning star and in a big way and it was films like Dil, Saajan and Beta which made Madhuri Dixit that box office star.

Dil had Aamir Khan but it became a Madhuri Dixit film, coincidentally the first four big hits of Aamir Khan (Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Dil, Rangeela and Raja Hindustani) all propelled the heroines as they took the credit.

Saajan had Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan while Beta had Anil Kapoor but generally it was Madhuri Dixit leading the way in these films.

Even Shahrukh Khan played second fiddle to Madhuri Dixit in Anjaam but Shahrukh Khan was on a crest of a wave at the time and the audience could not accept him as an outright villain and the film was rejected.

Then came the peak with Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Raja and it could be that "No Heroine had ever reached this level" but to live up to these box office expectations would have been difficult even for a huge male star and the downfall started.

Madhuri Dixit saw huge downfall after Raja which started with Paappi Devataa.
In 1996 Actresses like Karisma Kapoor and Kajol took over.

After that her 20 films released and only 4 became success. All with Shahrukh Khan (Koyla, Dil To Pagal Hai, Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam and Devdas).

But the sort of Stardom she saw during 1990-1995 phase was unparallel. No Heroine had ever dominated the boxoffice on such magnitude in the history of bollywood the way she dominated during this phase.

History Says There Is ONE Winner Or NO Winner In Clashes

Recent history suggests that in a clash there can be only one winner or two under performers. Though it is made out that if films are not similar and different genres they can co exist but that is not the case.

The last time a clash gave out real super hit films was ages back in the day of staggered releases where despite releasing on the same day, one film would release in Mumbai and the other in North or vice versa, this even saw three super hit films coming together. The little exception was Dil v Ghayal in 1990 but even here the former had raced ahead in first six months though Ghayal more than made up in repeat runs as the Sunny Deol action image got stronger and stronger in the 90's. If it was not for this only Dil would have been the blockbuster film.

Gadar v Lagaan in 2001 is another example normally used to show that two films can co-exist but here Lagaan was a loser in many circuits due to Gadar, it managed to survive due to super hit business in Mumbai and South but if it did not clash it would have become a major hit. This happened in the days of 300 screen releases when films could easily get the amount of screens needed which is not the case today when films are looking for 4000 screens.

In 2001, the perception was not through numbers so Lagaan got away with it due to media perception but today its totally different scenario and neither Gold or Satyamev Jayate will want or rather can't afford to be a Lagaan and loose the battle by a landslide as numbers will be there for all to see. In 2012 there was Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son Of Sardaar where both under performed but numbers were respectable but with the costs involverd.

Obviously its Gold that holds the upper hand because of the star power.

Satyamev Jayate will have tobe super strong in content to have any chance in front of Gold.

The likely scenario will be one real winner and one loser or two under performers though they can give the industry major hope that clashes can happen and go on to do 225-250 crore nett between them even in non festival period but that would be biggest and chances are very slim.
