Bahubali - The Conclusion All Languages Update

Bahubali 2: The Conclusion (Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam) has set a record in every state across India, barring Kerala. In Tamil Nadu, the GROSS figures are the highest of all time, but the NETT and distributor share are not. Still, this does mean it has collected the most at the box office in the state.

The previous all-India, all-languages record was 419 crore nett of Bahubali—The Beginning in 2015. This is a huge record and can only be beaten by a Telugu film that works in North India in the near future. The all-India figures of Bahubali 2: The Conclusion till date are as follows:

Hindi: 510 crore

Dubbed: 10 crore (Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam from Mumbai, Delhi/UUP, East Punjab, Rajasthan, CP Berar, CI, West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Odisha, and Marathwada)

Nizam/Andhra: 270 crore (not including Hindi)

Karnataka/Mysore: 80 crore (not including Hindi)

Tamil Nadu: 110 crore (not including Hindi)

Kerala: 56 crore

GRAND TOTAL: 1036 crore

INDIA GROSS: 1430 crore [including tax]

Overseas: $59,340,000 [INR: 380 crore]

WORLDWIDE GROSS: 1810 crore

United Kingdom Evolution - £100k To £4 Million Of Pathaan

Pathaan has breached the £4 million mark in United Kingdom as it sits on around £4.3 million till date and there is a little more to come. This number was just unthinkable before the release of Pathaan as the biggest films were just getting over the £1 million.

It was believed within the UK market that if Shahrukh Khan delivered a good film then the records of Dhoom 3 and Bajrangi Bhaijaan should be in danger and maybe even the £3 million mark. The expectations should have been higher as films were crossing £2 million 15-20 years ago but the market was just not the same as as before.

United Kingdom has always been the main overseas market for Hindi films since the last ten years when it diminished. The circuit has a long history of Hindi releases since the 50's and it was in the mid 60's that releases became regular. Below is the evolution of the United Kingdom market for Hindi films from £100k to £4 million

£100k - Do Raaste (1970) - The first film to break the £100k as it did a share of 9 lakhs and a gross of a little over £100k in United Kingdom. The music of the film was a rage.

£250k - Purab Aur Paschim (1971) - A historic BLOCKBUSTER in UK which was a golden jubilee hit running for over 50 weeks in London. The shows were weekend shows only but this film had a show every week for 50 weeks. The share in United Kingdom was an insane 25 lakhs and the film grossed around £285k.

£500k and £1 million - The Purab Aur Paschim record was finally broken 23 years later with the release of Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994) which took the market to another level. The market had deteriorated due to video and it was this film that bought the audiences back again and Hindi films started to being consumed in cinemas as well rather than at home. Kum Aapke Hain Hain grossed £1.05 million in United Kingdom.

£1.5 million - After £1 million being breached it was not long that £1.5 million came along as Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) crossed  the mark the very next year. It was the landmark film which made Shahrukh Khan a huge megastar in United Kingdom and overseas. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge grossed £1.58 million in United Kingdom.

£2 million - This mark was hit in 2001 with Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) which was a rage and remained the biggest grosser for 9 nine years and still probably has the highest number of footfalls for a Hindi film in the modern era in United Kingdom. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham grossed £2.5 million

£3 and £4 million - Pathaan(2023) did the job on both these benchmarks as it takes the business in United Kingdom to another level. It is the biggest blockbuster in UK since Kabhi Khush Kabhie Gham and it is only Shahrukh Khan who can break this record and even target the next benchmark which is £5 million. Pathaan will probably end up with around £4.4 million mark.

Note - There were films like Bobby (1973), Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974) and Dharam Veer (1977) which went close or had a similar share to Purab Aur Paschim but the grosses were lower. It was all rentals then and post the insane success of Purab Aur Pashchim recovery became faster. Dharam Veer had a record initial of £50k in just 23 shows in 5 cities driven by the blockbuster music with two Mohammad Rafi solo's becoming a rage. Even in those days it was the music which could take a film to another level in UK and its pretty much the same today.

Rewind: Salman Khan's interview to Filmy Duniya, April 1995.

Filmy Duniya,  April 1995

Filmy Duniya : Aapki Zindagi ka sabse behtareen pal ?
Salman : Jab meri mukhya abhineta ke taur par "Maine Pyar Kiya" release hui aur chali bhi khoob.

Filmy Duniya : Aur Sabse Kharab Pal ?
Salman : Ab Kya Bataein, Bura pal bhi yahi tha. Meri picture chali lekin mjhe koi nhi puch rha tha. Meri heroine saara shrey le gayin.  Mujhe sirf Media ka samarthan tha, lekin darshak aur film industry ke logon ko nhi lagta tha ki mjhe acting aati hai. Lagbhag 6 mahine ghar par khaali betha raha, Papa ne fir madat ki film dilwane mein.

Filmy Duniya : Fir Aapko "Baaghi" mili ?
Salman : Nhi, "Sanam Bewafa" pehle sign ki thi, lekin "Baaghi" pehle release hui. Jab "Baaghi" nhi chali tou maine Mumbai ke Distributor jo kaafi nuksaan mei tthe, unko "Patthar Ke Phool" kam daam mein dilwayi lekin shayad kismat kharab thi, wo bhi nhi chali.

Filmy Duniya : "Hum Aapke Hain Kaun" ke baad aapki 3 filmein aur Flop ho gayin, aur jin chuninda filmo mein aapko safalta mil rahi hai wahan abhinay mein koi aur baazi maar le jata hai.
Salman : Media aur alochak tou hamesha dost rahe hain, sabne acha hi likha hai hamesha. Darshak bhi dheere dheere apnane lage hain. Abhi kuch comedy filmein bhi kar raha hoon, ek mein dohri bhumika hai, koshish tou hai kuch acha aur alag karne ki baaki darshak pe hai wo kitna apnate hain.

Filmy Duniya : Aisi Koi Bhumika jisko nibhana aapka sapna hai ?
Salman : Main Kisi bhaari bharkam "Mughal-E-Azam" mein yakeen nhi rakhta, mera pasandida kirdar "Mard" film se "Amitabh Bachchan" ka hai. Main jab bhi apni alag picture likhunga, "Mard" ko jehen mei rakh ke hi likhunga.

Filmy Duniya : "Maine Pyaar Kiya" aur "Hum Aapke Hain Kaun" ke beech aapki kaafi filmein asafal rahi, kya aap nirash the ?
Salman : Nahi, aap bhul rahe hain "Saajan" aur "Sanam Bewafa" achi chali thi.

Filmy Duniya : Lekin "Saajan" mein kahin na kahin "Madhuri" aur "Sanjay Dutt" ke aage aapko utna shrey nhi mil paya, aapko nahi lagta ?
Salman : "Saajan" sirf gaano ki wajah se chali thi aur "Sanjay Dutt" bade bhai hain. Unka abhinay aur patr mujhse jyada behtar tthe. Meri aane waali film "Jeet" mein bhi "Sunny Deol" mukhya bhumika mein hain. Jabki "Majhdhaar" "Khamoshi" aur "Auzaar" mein mera ahem kirdar hai. Ye sab chalta rehta hai. Hum koi "Bachchan" nahi hain ki har picture mein chaaye rahen.

Filmy Duniya : Kya Aapko lagta hai wo daur phir se aaega jab ek kalakaar industry pe raaj karega ?
Salman : Main nhi chahta aisa daur kabhi firse aaye. "Amitabh Bachchan" ki shaksiyat kisi aur ko ubharne ke mauka nhi deti thi, lekin humko film chalane ke liye sabko sath lekar chalna hota hai. Unke jaane ke baad daur badal chuka hai, keh sakte hain 1960 ke dashak ki tarah abhinetriyan phir se apni upastithi darj karwa rahi hain aur ye badlav acha hi hai.

Aamir Khan's Record Breaking Run in Last 8 Years

As Dangal’s phenomenal, all-conquering run at the box office draws to a close, now is a good time to take stock of – and marvel at – the spectacular numbers and records achieved by what is now the highest-grossing Hindi film of all time.

Obviously, in the course of achieving such huge cumulative numbers, the film has shattered most circuit records too and is now the highest grosser in most territories, including: Delhi-UP (Rs.80.2 crore), East  Punjab (Rs.44.45 crore), CP (Rs.19.30 crore), CI (Rs.14.2 crore), Rajasthan (Rs.20.5 crore), Nizam (Rs.21.05 crore), Mysore (Rs.27.6 crore) and TNK (Rs.13.55 crore).

Zooming in a little further, Dangal now tops the All-Time collections charts for most cities too. Some of the major ones being: Mumbai City & Suburbs (`40 crore), Delhi (Rs.32 crore), Jaipur (Rs.8.85 crore), Indore (Rs.6.6 crore), Lucknow (Rs.4.7 crore), Kanpur (Rs.3.75 crore), Ghaziabad (Rs.8.5 crore) and Agra (Rs.2.25 crore).

The record-breaking (and making) spree doesn’t end there! Dangal is the first film to collect over `100 crore (gross) from a single multiplex chain, a feat it achieved at PVR Cinemas. Further, it is also the first film to collect at least Rs.1 crore (net) daily and uniterrupted for 31 days following its release, bettering the record previously shared by PK and Bajrangi Bhaijaan, both of which topped the Rs.1-crore mark daily for the first 26 days of their theatrical run.

The numbers notched up by the film are all the more remarkable considering the context in which they were achieved. Dangal released at a time when the country was still gripped with a cash cruch and a massive reduction in consumer spending post-demonetisation – something that undoubtedly impacted the revenues of releases after Novmber 8. However, much like in the climax of the film itself, this formidable adversary too was overcome and outclassed.

A huge round of applause is in order for everyone associated with this landmark film. But the biggest cheer must undoubtedly be reserved for the film’s leading man and producer, Aamir Khan.

Mr Khan is the undisputed Milestone Man of the Indian box office and has made a habit of going where no man has gone before! Astoundingly, Rs.100 crore (Ghajini), Rs.200 crore – and by default, the Rs.150-crore mark – (3 Idiots), Rs.250 crore (Dhoom 3) and Rs.300 crore (PK) – all these landmark thresholds have been crossed for the first time by films that feature him as the main lead.  And now, with Dangal, yet another unconqured frontier – the Rs.350-crore mark – has been breached by him.

In fact, the the trade’s only grouse would be the two-year gap that usually separates Aamir Khan releases. And given the superstar’s penchant for addressing social issues – as evidenced by his choice of films like Dangal, PK, 3 Idiots, Taare Zameen Par and Rang De Basanti as also his TV show, Satyamev Jayate – perhaps he should look at redressing the box office’s woes too by having more frequent releases! Are you listening – Mr Khan?!

Huge Hits Released On 8th AUGUST - SRK Starrers Lead

8th August has seen the release of some huge hit films. It is coincidence but August 8th has been a very lucky day for films at the box office over the last 20 years. There could be other big releases earlier but our database is not picking them up yet. The list of films that have been released on August 8th in the last 20 years are as follows. They are listed in their inflation adjusted gross.

BLOCKBUSTER
1. Chennai Express (2013) - 2,66,91,00,000
The 7th biggest HIT of Shahrukh Khan. The film released on Eid 2013 and became the highest grossing film ever beating the record of 3 Idiots. The film broke all opening records by huge margins. Did less business then its actually potential because of short 6 Days free run.

SUPER HIT
2. Pardes (1997) - 2,04,75,00,000
The Subhash Ghai directed love story was not a huge starter barring a big cities but picked up well in the later weeks to emerge a huge hit. the opening day was just 61 lakhs nett which was 55% of a big opener like Koyla released a few months back.

3. Koi Mil Gaya (2003) - 1,94,32,00,000
The film which established Hrithik Roshan as a major star after a poor period. The film opened at 2.25 crore nett on day one which was the second highest opening of the time and there was no looking back as the film did well across the board.

4. Singh Is Kinng (2008) - 1,40,28,00,000
The film still remains the only Akshay Kumar film to set an opening day record although Welcome (2007) would also be there if there was not issues with the release. The film set an All Time Record in East Punjab by becoming the highest nett grosser beating Gadar but the share and gross figures remained lower than Gadar.

FLOP

Entertainment (2014) - 82,58,00,000
The Akshay Kumar starrer did not open well which hits its chances. The collections okay after the first week but remained a poor performer. The film score big on television picking up the second highest rating in 2013 ahead of the likes of Dhoom 3 and Kick.

Gangs Of Wasseypur 2 (2012) - 29,13,00,000
The film is a second part of Gangs Of Wasseypur which was a poor performer a few months earlier. The first film was said to have gained appreciation but the initial of this one which was even lower that the first one put that fake theory out of the window. If only we had second parts of all these so called appreciated films it would help the truth come out.

Dadagiri (1997) - 29,00,00,000
A Mithun Starrer which was released at a time when the best days were over for the dancing star.

DISASTER

Basti - 2,32,00,000
A low budget film featuring Aamir Khan's brother Faisal Khan. The film had no chance at the box office.
