Rewind: Salman Khan's interview to Filmy Duniya, April 1995.

Filmy Duniya,  April 1995

Filmy Duniya : Aapki Zindagi ka sabse behtareen pal ?
Salman : Jab meri mukhya abhineta ke taur par "Maine Pyar Kiya" release hui aur chali bhi khoob.

Filmy Duniya : Aur Sabse Kharab Pal ?
Salman : Ab Kya Bataein, Bura pal bhi yahi tha. Meri picture chali lekin mjhe koi nhi puch rha tha. Meri heroine saara shrey le gayin.  Mujhe sirf Media ka samarthan tha, lekin darshak aur film industry ke logon ko nhi lagta tha ki mjhe acting aati hai. Lagbhag 6 mahine ghar par khaali betha raha, Papa ne fir madat ki film dilwane mein.

Filmy Duniya : Fir Aapko "Baaghi" mili ?
Salman : Nhi, "Sanam Bewafa" pehle sign ki thi, lekin "Baaghi" pehle release hui. Jab "Baaghi" nhi chali tou maine Mumbai ke Distributor jo kaafi nuksaan mei tthe, unko "Patthar Ke Phool" kam daam mein dilwayi lekin shayad kismat kharab thi, wo bhi nhi chali.

Filmy Duniya : "Hum Aapke Hain Kaun" ke baad aapki 3 filmein aur Flop ho gayin, aur jin chuninda filmo mein aapko safalta mil rahi hai wahan abhinay mein koi aur baazi maar le jata hai.
Salman : Media aur alochak tou hamesha dost rahe hain, sabne acha hi likha hai hamesha. Darshak bhi dheere dheere apnane lage hain. Abhi kuch comedy filmein bhi kar raha hoon, ek mein dohri bhumika hai, koshish tou hai kuch acha aur alag karne ki baaki darshak pe hai wo kitna apnate hain.

Filmy Duniya : Aisi Koi Bhumika jisko nibhana aapka sapna hai ?
Salman : Main Kisi bhaari bharkam "Mughal-E-Azam" mein yakeen nhi rakhta, mera pasandida kirdar "Mard" film se "Amitabh Bachchan" ka hai. Main jab bhi apni alag picture likhunga, "Mard" ko jehen mei rakh ke hi likhunga.

Filmy Duniya : "Maine Pyaar Kiya" aur "Hum Aapke Hain Kaun" ke beech aapki kaafi filmein asafal rahi, kya aap nirash the ?
Salman : Nahi, aap bhul rahe hain "Saajan" aur "Sanam Bewafa" achi chali thi.

Filmy Duniya : Lekin "Saajan" mein kahin na kahin "Madhuri" aur "Sanjay Dutt" ke aage aapko utna shrey nhi mil paya, aapko nahi lagta ?
Salman : "Saajan" sirf gaano ki wajah se chali thi aur "Sanjay Dutt" bade bhai hain. Unka abhinay aur patr mujhse jyada behtar tthe. Meri aane waali film "Jeet" mein bhi "Sunny Deol" mukhya bhumika mein hain. Jabki "Majhdhaar" "Khamoshi" aur "Auzaar" mein mera ahem kirdar hai. Ye sab chalta rehta hai. Hum koi "Bachchan" nahi hain ki har picture mein chaaye rahen.

Filmy Duniya : Kya Aapko lagta hai wo daur phir se aaega jab ek kalakaar industry pe raaj karega ?
Salman : Main nhi chahta aisa daur kabhi firse aaye. "Amitabh Bachchan" ki shaksiyat kisi aur ko ubharne ke mauka nhi deti thi, lekin humko film chalane ke liye sabko sath lekar chalna hota hai. Unke jaane ke baad daur badal chuka hai, keh sakte hain 1960 ke dashak ki tarah abhinetriyan phir se apni upastithi darj karwa rahi hain aur ye badlav acha hi hai.

Madhuri Dixit TRUE BoxOffice Queen (1988-1995)

The word STAR is a pretty misused word today due to the paparazzi as the need to put out information and pictures everybody appearing in films and television is a star. But what is a real star? Our reading of it is that it is someone who is liked by enough of the film going audience that makes the audience want to watch them.

The audience is prepared to pay and give their time and this what separates the real stars from paparazzi stars. The former will be very few while the latter will be in huge numbers.

Madhuri Dixit was one of those rare boxoffice female star between (1988-1995) and Last real female star industry has seen.

We have not created a genuine male box office star in the last fifteen years or more so it would take some doing by a female to achieve that status. But Madhuri Dixit was one of the four genuine female box office stars that the Hindi film industry has created, someone who really mattered at the box office as a sole entity. Basically in the same bracket as the Khans are today.

Madhuri Dixit is the last female box office star the film industry has seen.

Tezaab (1988) made her a huge star after a few years of struggle and the success of Tezaab was consolidated in a month with an even bigger blockbuster Ram Lakhan (1989) after another six months she got another Blockbuster with Tridev.

But at this point of time Sridevi was the reigning star and in a big way and it was films like Dil, Saajan and Beta which made Madhuri Dixit that box office star.

Dil had Aamir Khan but it became a Madhuri Dixit film, coincidentally the first four big hits of Aamir Khan (Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Dil, Rangeela and Raja Hindustani) all propelled the heroines as they took the credit.

Saajan had Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan while Beta had Anil Kapoor but generally it was Madhuri Dixit leading the way in these films.

Even Shahrukh Khan played second fiddle to Madhuri Dixit in Anjaam but Shahrukh Khan was on a crest of a wave at the time and the audience could not accept him as an outright villain and the film was rejected.

Then came the peak with Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Raja and it could be that "No Heroine had ever reached this level" but to live up to these box office expectations would have been difficult even for a huge male star and the downfall started.

Madhuri Dixit saw huge downfall after Raja which started with Paappi Devataa.
In 1996 Actresses like Karisma Kapoor and Kajol took over.
After that her 20 films released and only 4 became success. All with Shahrukh Khan (Koyla, Dil To Pagal Hai, Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam and Devdas).

But the sort of Stardom she saw during 1990-1995 phase was unparallel. No Heroine had ever dominated the boxoffice on such magnitude in the history of bollywood the way she dominated during this phase.

Sridevi - A Very Rare Female Star

The word STAR is a pretty misused word today due to the paparazzi as the need to put out information and pictures everybody appearing in films and television is a star. But what is a real star? Our reading of it is that it is someone who is liked by enough of the film going audience that makes the audience want to watch them.

The audience is prepared to pay and give their time and this what separates the real stars from paparazzi stars. The former will be very few while the latter will be in huge numbers. Now lets look at the scenario today we have possibly 4-5 genuine box office stars (all male) and then possibly another 7-8 stars (male and female). Now with such limited genuine stars it means the media has to create stars for their needs as the amount of time they have to give to entertainment news cannot be sustained by 11 or 12 people.

The demise of Sridevi has been all over the news lately and as you take a look at the filmography and the numbers then it comes out she was a very rare female star. We have not created a genuine male box office star in the last fifteen years or more so it would take some doing by a female to achieve that status. But Sridevi was one of the four genuine female box office stars that the Hindi film industry has created, someone who really mattered at the box office as a sole entity. Basically in the same bracket as the Khans are today. This is actually unthinkable today that a female star can reach that level today but you can never say never as its happened before. Blockbusters of the proportions of Bahubali - the Conclusion were there in the past but was unthinkable today but it happenned.

Below are the four female box stars that the industry has seen over the last 75 years or so. The period of box office domination is in brackets.

Mumtaz (1970-1974) - The first female star to have real box office clout. The blockbusters came with superstar Rajesh Khanna but the actors who were not doing well like Sanjeev Kumar (Khilona), Sanjay Khan (Mela) and Feroz Khan (Mela, Apradh) got big hits because of her popularity. Many newcomers got paired with Mumtaz as distributors picked up films on her name and one of these newcomers was even future superstar Amitabh Bachchan in Bandhe Haath. Due to the super hit heroine this film fetched a higher price than Zanjeer, the film which made Amitabh Bachchan a star. Rajesh Khanna lost super stardom in late 72 to early 73 but the films with Mumtaz still worked like Roti, Aap Ki Kasam and Prem Kahani in 74-75.

Hema Malini: (1973 - 1982) -  The Mumtaz phase did not last long within the industry as she decided to quit the industry and stopped signing films. Though in the audience eyes Mumtaz remained a huge star till 1974 as her films released, it was over within the industry in 1972 and the biggest benficiary was Hema Malini as many of the rejected Mumtaz films went to her including Seeta Aur Geeta. Hema Malini then probably went on to emerge the biggest female star ever. If the Mumtaz blockbusters came with early 70's superstar Rajesh Khanna then the Hema Malini blockbusters came with the mid 70's superstar Dharmendra including the biggest of them all Sholay and 15 odd other 200 crore nett plus grossers (todays rates). She even gave the fading stars like Rajendra Kumar (Gora Aur Kala) and Dev Anand (Amir Garib) huge hits. The blockbusters continued into the 80's like Kranti and Naseeb and although these were multistarrers, Hema Malini had a huge presence in these films despite the galaxy of stars in them.

Sridevi (1984 - 1992) - Sridevi became a huge star in 1983 with Himmatwala which was a huge hit and at that time there was a vacant top spot and she had grabbed it in no time. Himmatwala is said to be released in the same week of her death but the film was actually released on 4th February in Delhi / UP and East Punjab and clashed with a bigger star cast film Taqdeer (Shatrughan Sinha, Hema Malini, Zeenat Aman and Mithun Chakraborty) and did not do well with the bigger film out grossing it but later on Himmatwala emerged a huge hit. The hits flowed with Justice Chaudhary, Mawaali, Maqsad and Tohfa. Then like Mumtaz and Hema Malini earlier she carried many heroes in films like Nagina, Mr India and Chandni all which did very well especially Nagina which was a huge blockbuster. There was a film called Guru which had Mithun Chakraborty at his peak in the title role but it was Sridevi who was in the double role. This is like the heroine having a double role in Salman Khan's Sultan. The numbers of Sridevi may not have been high as Mumtaz or Hema Malini but this was also a bad phase (almost as bad as today) in the industry as video had taken over and footfalls had dwindled.

Madhuri Dixit: (1990 - 1995) - Madhuri Dixit is the last female box office star the film industry has seen. Tezaab made her a huge star after a few years of struggle and the success of Tezaab was consolidated in a month with an even bigger blockbuster Ram Lakhan. Then came the peak with Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Raja and it could be that no heroine had ever reached this level but to live up to these box office expectations would have been difficult even for a huge male star and the downfall started.

After these huge female stars there has been Karisma Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai, Rani Mukherjee, Preity Zinta, Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone who at a given point of time have been number one heroines but generally not at a level where they can compete with the top male leads of the time. The next to test this will be Alia Bhatt and here it could be that she challenges the heroes of her generation but will those heroes be real box office stars.

Judwaa v Judwaa 2 Comparision - 21 Years On

Judwaa was released 21 years ago and proved to be huge hit in Mumbai and Nizam /Andhra and did well elsewhere.
The film was major release after a long time due to the one month strike in Maharashtra due to high entertainment tax.

The film was also the film which gave the career of Salman Khan a major lift as although he had much bigger Hits than Judwaa before they were either two hero films like Saajan, Karan Arjun and Jeet or ensemble cast ones like Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Sanam Bewafa where the supporting artistes have major roles.

The interesting thing about Judwaa is that box office numbers of Judwaa and Judwaa 2 released last year are so very similar. Not in terms of gross as after 21 years that is impossible but the adjusted numbers and footfalls are so very similar. in another words a similar number of tickets were sold and the business if ticket inflation is factored in, is also similar.

Judwaa (1997) has an adjusted nett gross on 2017 ticket prices of 131.11 crore while Judwaa 2 (2017)  grossed 132.4 crore

The footfalls of Judwaa (1997) were 1.36 crore while the footfalls of Judwaa 2 (2017) are 1.30 crore. If we look at the ratios of the biggest circuits than Judwaa (1997) did 34.77% in Mumbai and 19.71% in Delhi / UP while Judwaa 2 (2017)  is 27.46% in Mumbai and 24.26% in Delhi / UP.

The film was not a brand when Judwaa 2 released and even when Judwaa 2 became a big hit it could not be called a brand but after what has happened on satellite over the last month or so the film has become a huge brand. The film is the fourth most appreciated film of last year taking into account theatrical and satellite audience. The mega television ensures Judwaa 3 is a sure shot if it is ever made (though not 20 years later like Judwaa 2).

Bahubali 2 Is The Biggest Hindi Blockbuster This Century

Bahubali 2 - The Conclusion has emerged the biggest Hindi blockbuster this century as it became a bigger blockbuster than Gadar Ek Prem Katha (2001). Bahubali 2 has notched up 5.21 crore footfalls in Hindi in five weeks beating Gadar Ek Prem Katha which was 5.06 crore. These two films stand head and shoulders above the rest this century with both topping 5 crore footfalls. Dangal lag well behind with 3.61 crore. Bahubali 2 in Hindi is not the biggest blockbuster ever as there will probably be 8-10 other films topping 5 crore footfalls.

Basically Bahubali 2 (Hindi) is the biggest blockbuster this century. In terms of all time it is probably in the Hindi top ten or at least very close to the top ten. The biggest achievement by Bahubali 2 (Hindi) is that 5 crore footfalls have come after 16 years and it looked as if it would never happen because films were struggling to even get close to 4 crore. This film has shown that blockbusters of epic proportions that can compete with legendary blockbusters are still possible. We were in a period that records were being broken every year or two but Bahubali 2 will change this as when in history a film like this has come then records have stuck for sometime. The hope will be that it does not take another 16 years to have a blockbuster of this level. The biggest Hindi blockbusters of the last 25 years with the adjusted nett gross (the older films are adjusted for 2016 levels as there is no Average Ticket Price for 2017 yet) are as follows.

1. Hum Aapke Hain Kaun - 7,05,00,00,000

2. Bahubali 2 - 5,04,00,00,000 apprx (40 Days)

3. Gadar Ek Prem Katha - 4,82,00,00,000

4. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge - 4,58,00,00,000

5. Raja Hindustani - 3,90,00,00,000

Bahubali 2 - The Conclusion (all languages) has close to 10 crore footfalls across India which is more than Hum Aapke Hain Kaun though its in four languages compared to the one of Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and even if we add Hum Aapke Hain Kaun in Telugu then Bahubali 2 (all languages) still remains well ahead.

If we take the 10 crore footfalls it still probably is not the biggest blockbuster ever in India as Mother India (1957), Mughal E Azam (1960) and Sholay (1975) will have more footfalls than Bahubali 2 and they were just one format films.
