Tiger Shroff Changes The Star Equation
Baaghi 2 released over a few weeks back has changed the equations as far as the star pecking order is considered. Tiger Shroff has come out of the blue with this film to stand on the tails of the big five (Khans, Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan). In fact it could even be said that it will be Tiger Shroff that will be the driver of the untitled Hrithik Roshan / Tiger Shroff film to be released next October.
Tiger Shroff is at that point where a film has created an image and its up to him to either consolidate this over the next 2-3 years to become that big popular box office star or let the opportunity go and remain the normal star or even fade. If we look back over the last 30 years then these moments have arrived six times and three times they have been taken, twice missed and this one remains to be seen. The difference between Tiger Shroff and his contempories after Baaghi 2 is that he has become a man from a boy but the real battle starts now for him as its the consolidation that is harder than that one big opener which gives the chance to be a huge box office draw.
In 1990 Ghayal hit the screens and gave Sunny Deol that huge action image which he consolidated through the 90's with many super hits and if it was action and the film was poor it still opened to full houses. Ghayal released with Dil which was actually a bigger hit in the first six months of the their respective runs but the business of Ghayal went ahead within the next year as repeat runs did huge business as the image got stronger and stronger with time.
In 1995 Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge came and created another huge box office star. Actually it was not Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge that made Shahrukh Khan the big box office star as he became already big after Baazigar & Darr. After DDLJ release Romantic image was created busting the box office. Action has dominated the box office since the release of Mera Gaon Mera Desh in June 1971 till today and in those 47 years only Shahrukh Khan managed to create a huge fan following without an action image.
Then came the turn of Hrithik Roshan in 2006 as Krrish and Dhoom 2 hit screens within six months and the industry was on a verge of a huge action / dancing star but there was no consolidation. The next five years saw Jodhaa Akbar, Kites, Guzaarish and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, not one film was in the Krrish and Dhoom 2 zone which had created a potential megastar and although films like Krrish 3 and Bang Bang came later, the star draw was not the same as 2006 due to the likes of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Guzaarish pushing the potential superstar down.
In 2009 came Wanted which was not a huge blockbuster but created this action star image for Salman Khan who until then was more of a romantic hero. He consolidated this image with films like Dabangg and Bodyguard and there was no looking back. These film were not the biggest blockbusters of the career of Salman Khan but created an image where the huge openings materialized which was not the case with some of the earlier bigger hits. A hugely popular box office star was created who till today dominates the ticket windows eight years later.
In 2013 it was the turn of Ranbir Kapoor with Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani putting him on a pedestal with the youth going crazy over and it was just a matter of time when another huge star with youth on his side dominates the box office. But the audience has never seen Ranbir Kapoor in that Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani format again and its been five years and those sort of chances rarely come again. A Raj Kumar Hirani film may turn out to be a bigger hit but its a biopic and it will not be your personality on screen but someone else so the impact is nothing like a Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani for the audience. The mega opening of a poor film like Besharam released five months after Yeh jawwani Hai Deewani was a sign of what could have been but it was not to be.
Now its 2018 and Tiger Shroff is in the position where the guys above were and its about consolidating your image over the next 2-3 years if you can. There will be a lot of trashing by the media when you play to an image especially an action one, the films will not get not get stars and you will be told you are not a actor but you will have to rise above that and go by the facts and figures which never lie. All it takes is a mistake or two and you never get that time back again.
The audience will expect different films but with image intact and it remains to be seen if Tiger Shroff goes the Sunny Deol, Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan way or misses the killer opportunity like Hrithik Roshan or Ranbir Kapoor. There will be stars in the younger generation that see image as a hindrance but it does not work that way as an image still allows you work in other genres as long as long as its in the commercial format. Yes the arty stuff is a risk but you cant have it both ways as stardom creates expectations and these expectations can only be matched or exceeded with popular cinema.

Rewind - Ranbir Kapoor V Salman Khan Box Office Clash
God Tussi Great Ho was expected to do better before release.
Bachna Ae Haseeno was ahead from day one with more than double margin.
And it was shocking for the trade because end result can be anything
considering word of mouth but Bigger stars always takes more initial.
The Initial of this film can give you actual idea of Salman Khan Star Power
at that time.
Bachna Ae Haseeno remained ahead through the run and finished
with 36.19 crore nett almost three times more than God Tussi Great Ho 12.51cr.
Bachna Ae Haseeno also managed to fare much better in Overseas
despite God Tussi Great Ho having more Overseas Screens.
Can Robot 2 Smash All Records Box Office Records In Hindi
Q. Will Ranbir Kapoor have to commercial masala film to really fulfill his potential as a big star as he is the best out of the young ones but his numbers are more or less tha same as others.
A. Masala films don't mean anything, some can be good and some can be bad and the results at the box office will be as per the film. A poor masala film is not going to do big numbers which is the same for a film about any genre. Its about making good films with story telling which the audience understands. You don't have to do a masala film to put up a big grosser, it can be a drama, love story or action but it has to have good content which is relatable to the audience. Also every artiste has to make choices as to what they think is good and hope the audience thinks the same, you can't prempt as that way you may do something you don't believe in and that will show in performance.
R. Mallik
Q. You have said that the cash crunch is not the reason for the huge disaster of Rock On 2 but although the the first Rock On may not be much at the box office it was a respected film and would that not have been an advantage?
A. Respected by who? Cinema audience in India did not take to it, ditto cinema audience for Overseas, the television audience rejected it outright. So when none of the audience is respecting it, there is no respect. You are probably coming from what is written in media but that may be 500 or 1000 people, lets say there are even 100,000 but when the public has spelled it out these vagye opinions mean nothing. Respect only comes from the audience and Rock On!! (2008) did not get it so results were inevitable for Rock On 2 though on a normal release it could have done 15 crore nett instead of 10 crore nett but that would still be a disaster.
N. Ramana
Q. Can Robot 2 smash all records box office records in hindi also due to the presence of Akshay Kumar?
A. Robot 2 is a Rajnikant film, not an Akshay Kumar film, he is the villain a bit like what Sanjay Dutt was in Agneepath and Vivek Oberoi was in Krrish 3. Even in the Hindi belt the audience will see it as an Rajnikant film as you can't change the theatrical trailer and present it as Akshay Kumar film who is villain. The plus will be that Robot was a huge hit on television so recall value is there and the key will be how grand is the scale of film. These things could make the opening like a big Hindi release in the hindi markets despite it being dubbed. At an all India level it can be anything with a star like Rajnikant there as South records will be shattered.
Anil Gharde
Q. Who would you say is the biggest star out of John Abraham, Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor
A. Out of the three it would be Shahid Kapoor though bad choices like Haider, Shaandar and Udta Punjab has meant potential has not been fulfilled and younger stars have raced past with better films. There is still a chance for some redemption with Padmavati because if the film is like the original story then the story is such that the audience can only be with one of the heroes and if it is Shahid Kapoor they relate with more and the film is a hit it would be a huge shot in the arm. Of course if it goes the way of Ranveer Singh then that will be it as far as becoming a real star goes.

The Alternative HITS - Barfi TOP
Barfi the biggest hit out of these went to another level and even crossed 100 crore nett though that was through clever distribution which would have added 8-10 crore. Still the film going that far was a bit of fluke and this won't be repeated very often. It could have also been due to the presence of a star like Ranbir Kapoor but normally these types dont really work with the target audience with starcasts and examples are many from Haider to Bombay Velvet to Dil Dhadakne Do to Baar Baar Dekho. Below are a list of HIT films (only HITS listed) which have a 90% apprx contribution from multiplexes and around 60-65% business is coming from Mumbai and Suburbs, Pune, Delhi NCR / Chandigarh, Hyderbad, Bangalore and Kolkata. .
1. Barfi - 1,06,14,00,000
2. Piku - 77,78,00,000
3. Kapoor & Sons - 71,17,00,000
4. Neerja - 69,91,00,000
5. Pink - 63,83,00,000
6. Queen - 56,38,00,000
7. Kahaani - 53,74,00,000
8. Badlapur - 49,62,00,000
9. Kai Po Che - 48,58,00,000
10. Vicky Donor - 37,31,00,000
What is also common with all these films is that they only have a life as long as they are on the theatres as all were disasters on televisions.
Three Biggest DISASTERS 2010-2019 Decade
The first mega disaster was released on 10 April 2015. Calling this film a mega disaster is being very kind, there has been nothing like this before or possibly will never come again. Broken Horses was a film made for international audiences by a Hindi filmmaker but no one saw the film and actually its best numbers came in India despite being for International audiences. The film was reported to be made at a cost of $16.5million (102 crore, April 2015 rates) by the western press but that seems typical of an Indian filmmaker, giving an exaggerated budget and its probably around 50-60 crore. The recovery for the film from all revenue sources was 75 lakhs. If a film 30 years ago cost 3 crore and recovered 75 lakhs it was a mega disaster, here its 60 crore and possibly 102 crore if the maker is to be believed. Its hard to give a hit but probably even harder to give a disaster of this proportion. The US / Canada business for whom the film was made for had a lifetime of $31k.
The second mega disaster was released on 18 May 2015. Bombay velvet had a cost of 118 crore and its recovery from all sources was around 29 crore giving it a loss of 89 crore. At the time Ranbir Kapoor was an upcoming star but the total rejection of this film hit him the hardest. It was just unbelievable that a niche film was made at such a high cost. Though with such high cost, the actors and technical team would have benefited in terms of remuneration on the account of the people funding the film.
The third mega disaster was released last month on 12 Aug 2016. Mohenjo Daro cost around 138 crore to produce and release an its recovery from all revenue sources will be around 55 crore giving it a loss of around 83 crore. The film is probably not as big as disaster as the films above but still the losses are huge as the budget too high for film which holds little relevance with today's audience. It also has a knock back affect on an established star like Hrithik Roshan and makes the future projects look much weaker than the were pre Mohenjo Daro.
The order for the disasters would be
1. Broken Horses (This will be tough to beat))
2. Bombay Velvet
3. Mohenjo Daro

TOP ACTOR - DOWN THE YEAR 1940-2024
This Criteria for TOP ACTOR / ACTRESS in the DOWN THE YEAR SECTION is as follow
Here everything is taken into account to show the actual popularity. It takes into account the box-office as well as other factors like, genre, the makers, the setup, release period, the real effect of that film on a career and everything else contributing to the position of an artist. The point system works on a yearly basis and a film released towards the end of the year will be effective in the following year. There will be a years when an artist will be down on points despite openings and success but this will be because the system will see the year not as strong as the previous unless the build up to a big year is strong. This is basically our system showing how popular an artiste was and when. There are more artistes tracked and if success is consistent for years they will show up on the charts.
An artiste is tracked when they meet with box-office stardom and until they phase out. A popular artiste may not have releases but the stardom does not fall away overnight so there will be people in the charts despite no releases.
An actor going below 500 is seen as phase out and the the actress level is 350. Only 30 years maximum will be applied as nobody lasts that long as a real box office star. The same methods are applied to actors and actresses and in some years it could mean an actress having as much or even more popularity than an actor.
