Q. After KMG Hrithik is the hottest actor...will it affect the opening week of lakshya...and what is going to be lakshya's Average Price Per Territory, budget and fait at the bo???

A. Lakshya has a budget of 30-35 crore. The film will probably have a price of 3-3.5 crore per major territory and should open well. But in the long run it is unlikely the film is going to do well outside the metros unless it has all the commercial ingredients like Koi Mil Gaya.

 

   

Q. You said that "Dil to Paagal hai" is the largest sold audio since 1990. But Tips website mentions it to be "Raja Hindustani" with 1.5 crore copies sold in Indian Market.

A. There are claims that Dil To Paagal Hai sold 2 crore.
 

   

Q. You have Dharmendra as No1 in 73,74,75 but wasn't Big B No1 after Zanjeer.

A. The media has a tendency to simplify things, its like if Hrithik continues giving hits in the next 10 years. They will say Hrithik was No.1 from 2000 when it is not quite like that. In 1973 Dharmendra gave 6 hits and 2 of them were blockbusters.

 

 

Q. Why are action films called safe bets.?

A. They tend to have more universal appeal and even if they flop they tend to lose less than romances and comedies. An action film with hit music is the safest bet out there. Your returns are guaranteed.

 

 

Q. How long will it take for a film to cross Gadar?

A. It could happen soon, with digital prints coming in next year, some films will be released on 800-1000 prints and if any of these films is liked as much as Gadar then its likely the final Net Gross will be in excess of 100 crore.

 

 

Q. Why are so many anti-pak films being made?

A. These films are doing good business. The next 4-5 really big films are anti pak be it LOC, Deewar, Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo or Lakshya.

A. The effect will be seen towards the end of next year when 1500 halls will been converted to digital. Films with scope will be released with 800-1000 prints and 500-600 will be digital which will boost income for mass orientated and action films by around 100%.

A. It flopped due to its high price of 1 crore per territory.

 

 

Q. Why is it that very few bollywood movies release in more than 300 screens while a regional Chiranjeevi starrer has reportedly managed to release in 400 screens down south ?

A. The exhibition sector for Hindi films is in a poor state, distributors are wary of releasing a lot of prints, they seem to be thinking if the film clicks then they will add prints. In the South they have Entertainment Tax advantages and an important factor is that they make films for an audience that has a similar taste in one state while Hindi films cater for All India that has diverse tastes.

A. Its not about us being against them, its up to them to give hits so nobody can say anything.

A. The Hero at around a ratio of 3.75 crore per major territory.

 

 

Q. Why Khakee is not in box office India's top 5 Red Hot moives in the circuit chart?

A. It was close between Kal Ho Na Ho and Khakee but we feel that Kal Ho Na Ho is a better bet.

 

 

Q. Which Hollywood flick is the biggest grosser and hit across India?

A. Titanic with a Net Gross of around 40 crore from all over India.

 

 

Q. What is David Dhawans box office standing after 'ek aur ek gyarah', is he still the highest paid director, what are your expectations from  'mujhse shaadi karoge' ?

A. David is not as hot as he was in the 93-00 period and is definitely not the highest paid director anymore but Mujhse Shaadi Karoge has high expectations due to the big set up and a producer with a good track record.

 

 

Q. What is the budget of Baghban & distribution price? What was the status of Aankhen (new)?

A. We have not heard an official total from the Chopra's but an estimate would be around 15 crore. Aankhen was a hit in Mumbai but average or losing elsewhere.

 

 

Q. Who was the biggest threat to Amitabh No1 position? Vinod Khanna or Anil Kapoor?

A. Jeetendra. It all started when a film solo Jeetendra starrer called Meri Awaaz Suno shocked the trade by taking a better initial than Amitabh's Kaalia. Both films were released within a week of each other. Then call it by fate or coincidence Jeetendra superhits were releasing at roughly the same time as  poor Amitabh starrers and taking bigger initials be it Himmatwala v Nastik or Mawaali v Mahaan. But Jeetendra was gracious enough to accept that Amitabh was No1 to 10 so no rivalry was built up. Vinod Khanna and Anil Kapoor were more media made threats they did not have the collections from their solo films to be a threat to Amitabh. Though Vinod Khanna did do well in films which co-starred Amitabh so that was the reason he was called a threat but at the box office there was a big gap.

 

  

Q. What is the source for your audio-selling data? Are they collected from cassette companies or estimated from Whole-salers and retailers of selected cities?

A. They are from cassette companies but as they give totals that are sent into the market so it has to be estimated from data from music wholesalers what amount was sent back to the music companies. We feel this way gives a good picture.

It’s pointless to get data from 4/5 big cities that accounts for only 20% of the market.

 

   

Q. Which was the best musical hit of 2002 and how many copies did it sell?

A.Raaz-25 lakh units

 

    

Q. Last year (2002), as per media and some trade persons, Vivek Oberoi was the next superstar in making, and they said he was a major threat to Hrithik’s stardom. It looked true to some extent in 2002. Can Oberoi Jr. / Bachchan Jr. be a threat to Roshan Jr. in future? What is your view in this regard?

A. Hrithik has no competition from his contemporizes. Vivek and Abhishek are yet to give a hit. At the moment these two are miles behind Hrithik as for the future only time can tell.

 

 

Q. What is the budget of Kal Ho Na Ho & its price per territory? As of now it is scheduled for Nov. 28^th, considering the major releases lined up in Nov-Dec, is there any chance of change in release date?

A. The budget is around 20 crore, we don't have any info on price yet. Johar's are adamant that they will come on Nov 28th.

 

    

Q. How come you have called Tere Naam a BB- above average, the film has grossed well over its budget, and even the audio has made more money than the films budget?
A. All classifications are based on distributors price so Tere Naam had a price of around 1.5 crore per major territory and so if it did 1.5-2.0 it would be B-Average, if 2-2.5 the BB-Above Average, if 2.5-3.0 then A-Semi Hit and if 3-4 then AA(Hit) but as Tere Naam is going to finish on 2.25-2.5 it makes it BB-Above Average.

 

  

Q. Will AJAY DEVGAN's status in your chart changes due to his current streak?

A. Obviously because his price has gone up to 2-2.5 crore and if he gives that big solo 20 crore grosser then it will be sone pe suhaaga for Ajay.

 

 

Q. Is ajay devgan is very hot now a days in distribution circle? Where does ajay devgan has good grip in India?

A. He is amongst the top 5. He has a good grip all over especially the North when he does action roles like Qayamat and Zameen.

  

 

Q. What is the fate of Tere Naam and is Salman back

A. It’s an Average fare and there is no doubt that Salman is back.

   

Q. Why you show BAADSHAH as an average success because I heard that movie was declared flop

A. It managed to recover its costs in most territories.

 

 

Q. What and how much impact does the business of The Hero and Jaal will make on sunny's upcoming solo movie...Gandhi, JBSN?  ie: Can he still pull the crowd to get huge openings?

A. Sunny is an established hero so as long as the film is not against his action image or stale it will get a big opening.

 

  

Q. With parawana and chori chori being disasters, does that affect ajay devgans career?
A. Not really as there are less expectations from Ajay Devgan starrers than say SRK or Sunny starrers in the trade so he can get away with a few duds.

 

 

Q. What film has sold the most audio tapes overseas? who are the most liked actors overseas in uk and us?

A. Dil To Paagal Hai. In the UK its Shahrukh Khan. In the USA Shahrukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Salman Khan are about equal.

A. The Burning Train was an average fare but called a flop because it had high expectations a bit like MPKDH. No Kal Ki Awaaz was a seperate film.

 

 

Q. How comes on your Top Actors Down the years topic, you haven’t put Salman Khan for 1994 and 1990, were he had A111 hit Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun?

A. The trade gives rankings by judging the stars contribution to a hit and how much a stars film can generate when it is sold. Salman is there in 2000 but he had no major hits that year but he still had a strong fan following, in 90 or 94 his fan following was not that strong.

 

 

Q. How long is salman khans role in bagban?
A. About as long as his role in KKHH around 20 minutes. 

 

      

Q. On release in 2000, Taran Adarsh and other sections of the media said that Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega was a hit. Yet you have not named it in your  top 5 box office hits for 2000, and surely Badal was a film which did above average business and was not a hit. Have you made a mistake?? I remember at the end of 2000, everyone was unanimous in declaring HDJPK a hit movie. Please Clarify. 

A. Badal did business of 2.5 crore per major territory on a price of 1.5 crore. HDJPK did 2.5 crore in Mumbai and 2 crore elsewhere of a price of 1.75-2 crore per major territory. HDJPK droped badly after a good initial while Badal did steady business for 7-8 weeks. Film Information called HDJPK a loser outside Mumbai.

 

 

Q. What was the reason for the big drop in Tere naam? What is the status of Tere naam, and can it still be a hit?

A. The poor second half, it’s unlikely it will be a Hit but it won't flop either. 

    

Q. Hi guys could tell me what people’s expectation from the jaal the trap and how big it might open?
A. Jaal-The trap should open well due to presence of Sunny Deol but it is a 6 year old film launched in 1997 so that could go against it. Though the last long delayed film to be a hit was also a Sunny Deol starrer namely Ghatak.

 

 

Q. Why are so many filmmakers rushing to make crossover films?

A. Obviously, they are inspired by the overseas success of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. In the Overseas territory, these two films are like Sholay and Gadar-Ek Prem Katha are in India.

 

 

Q. Why did the collections of Bhoot come crashing down from the 3rd day onwards in centers other than Mumbai and Delhi? Why not in the two metropolitan cities?

A. Audiences in cities like Mumbai, Pune and Delhi patronize films high on novelty even if they don't have strong story value. But in most other centers the paying public still wants story. Novelty is a bonus but they don't want a bonus at the cost of their staple diet (story). Bhoot was high on novelty (sound effects of the kind never heard before on the Hindi screen) but low on content.

 

 

Q. I have seen that Chalte Chalte had a first week gross of 8.75-9.0 crore but you have it as 7.31 crore, how?

A. Again as with the Gadar - Ek Prem Katha question above it is impossible for Chalte Chalte to gross 8.75 or 9 crore on just 223 prints. The collections we have put up are from its respective distributors in each territory and are correct. This Shahrukh film is released on just 223 prints and this has been proved again this week as a  Rajshri / Hrithik film has been released on 350 odd prints.

 

 

Q. What is the actual status of the hero at the box office or is yet to be declared coz ure reports show it a BB- above average, rediff calls it a flop,b4u calls it hit, filmfare calls it a mod hit, indiafm and pb haven't given any specific status yet.

A. It’s a reasonable earner but most of its distributors are in the red because of high prices paid, it’s not a success. As for Net reporting there are only two sites that have print publications that are renowned for box office reporting and they are Indiafm(Trade Guide) and Screenindia(Screen).

 

 

Q. Hi I wanted to know how much the budget (actual money spent on making the film) is for the following films: chalte chalte, The Hero, Jaal-the trap and Main prem ki dewani hoon?

A. 11, 45, 16 and 25 crore respectively.

 

 

Q.Is it right to say that the days of making universally appealing films are over? Will we now have to live with sectional hits only?

A. Don't despair. It may have become more difficult to make a universal hit but not impossible. Gadar-Ek Prem Katha was only 2 years ago. Keep your fingers crossed for a universal hit soon.

 

 

Q. Who are the hottest actors in the Delhi/UP circuit?

A. Sunny Deol and Shahrukh Khan (more in Delhi than UP)

 

Q. I wanted to know how is the hero a BB when it has only collected in 25 crore and its budget is 50 crore. it should be a disaster it has lost over 25 crore.

A. All films are judged on what they make for distributors and The Hero has made reasonable money. As for its budget only the producers know the amount they spent on the film and why they undersold it if they did.

 

 

Q. On your site you have put the market values of the actors and actresses but how comes sunny is at 5 crore when no actor except Aamir khan has got more than 5 crore for a film and second is Salman khan with 4 crore.

A. Aamir Khan's highest pay day has been Dil Chahta Hai at 3 crore and Salman 2.5 crore for Chori Chori Chupke Chupke. Sunny Deol received the Delhi/UP territory for The Hero which has worked out to be 5 crore.

 

 

Q. Which movie grossed more Chalte Chalte or Tere Naam ?

A. Chalte Chalte

A. No. The Hero still has the best opening though Qayamat is better than the rest.

A. It’s one of our 5 to watch and even though the poor response to MPKDH may affect its opening by 10-15% we still feel it may be the universal hit that the industry is waiting for.

 

 

Q. How much will Jaal-The Trap gross in the first week?

A.Its come on 500 prints so the minimum net gross will be 6.5 crore unless it’s a disaster. We give it a range from 7-10 crore.

 

 

Q. Having seen Abhishek in his last 2 films (MPKDH &OJJ)I think this guy has huge potential, what do you feel are the box office chances of his next couple of films, and if one strikes it big - do you think he could be a huge box office star.

A. Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost and Kuch Na Kaho look like struggling at the box office but Zameen will open big as it’s a action film and may be the turning point of his career, we wish him the best.

 

 

Q. What is the official verdict of main prem ki diwani hoon is it a hit, average or flop

A. It has been rejected by the audience in India.

 

 

Q. How will Lakshya and Ek fare?

A. Both will flop. The directors of both films make films which appeal to a small section of the public so it’s best for them to make small budget films which can recover their costs with a limited audience. Both are media created directors they are missing the biggest quality of a director which is to know the pulse of your audience.

 

   

Q.Can you please tell me the current status of Ajay DEvgan at the box Office...? And can we rate him as the hottest the present as he is having two continuous successes like BHHOT and QAYAMAT..? And what would you think that about his upcoming movies like  parwana,chori chori,gangajal, khakee,..loc.,zameer and zameen?

A. At the moment he is hot and as long as he continues in action mode the box office will be kind to him. He has the best roles in multi starrers like Khakee, Zameen and LOC. These 3 films will open to great houses. Chori Chori and Gangajal may struggle and Parwana and Zameer may do well in small centers.

 

   

Q.Whats your take on Koi Mil Gaya?

A.The film will get a 10 crore opening week,the rest depends on how the public takes to it.

A. For stars it’s all about gross there market position is made up by how much their films gross but for producers it’s all about profits so the hit status is important to them.

 

 

Q. Howz it going with Jaal in its first week?

A. Its reasonable, the film will be safe in East Punjab, Rajasthan, Bihar and Nizam and maybe Delhi/UP.

A.We has given Mr Nahta's views above. Mr Adarsh even believes that Ishq Vishk is a hit so he is bound to believe that the others are super hits. As for the other person we have never heard of, where Indian box office is concerned.

 

   

Q.Can you tell me the budget of tere naam and tell me how much it will probably collect in its first week?

A. It’s around 12 crore. The second question is impossible to answer at the moment.

 

 

Q.On music sales, can you tell me how much units are sold for these films TERE NAAM, kuch naa kaho, dil ka rishta and khushi?

A. Tere Naam and Kuch Na Kaho will be up in the next music update. Both Khushi and Dil ka Rishta had sales of around 8 lakhs.

 

 

Q. Can you tell me the latest box office report of the small film CHUPKE SE?

A. The film has not been released as of yet it may get a September release.

 

 

Q. Can you also tell me the box office report for kaante and saathiya?

A. Kaante was an average fare with bumper initial while Saathiya was a good fare in Mumbai but average to losing outside Mumbai.

 

 

Q.I remembers you've said that if there's any disadvantage to Jaal it's the delay of 5-6 yrs...But on the other hand most of the critics (included boxofficeIndia) expected Jaal to do great business in its 1st week and open big and even bigger than Qayamat with 7-10cr but i only opened to 5cr.  Taran and Komal was also talking about Jaal being a hot project in India esp. in north and CP even with zero promotions and little music sales before it's release. Throw some words on that.

A. Many reasons are thrown about when a film does not do well just as they are when a film does well. It’s hard to pinpoint the actual reasons. Jaal was okay in the first three days but not like what Sunny Deol films normally do and from Monday the writing was on the wall. The project was called hot because all Sunny Deol action films are hot.

 

  

Q.Who is a bigger star Ajay Devgan or Akshay Kumar?

A. Ajay Devgan but there is not much in it. Both are yet to give that 20 crore grossing film but Ajay Devgan may be making big strides this year seeing the plum projects he has coming up.

A. Do Raaste,Aradhana,Sacha Jhuta and Haathi Mera Saathi.

A. The public only has interest in the film. The promos and music is good and promos have some action so that should lead the way to a good opening.

Q.Did Dilip Kumar overshadaw Amitabh in the 1982 film Shakti?

A. There was a war between Amitabh and the media at the time so whenever Amitabh made a film with another star be it Dilip Kumar,Vinod Khanna or Shatrughan Sinha they tended to overplay the other star. The main reason Shakti did not do as well as expected was that the masses wanted Amitabh but there was too much Dilip Kumar in the film who was well past his sell by date at the box office in 1982.

A. No. He is yet to give a big grosser. His Andaaz is his first film to cross the 15 crore mark so he has a long way to go. Stars are judged by how much their film can gross.

    

Q. Is it true that Ajay Devgan was given the National Award from the jury Prakash Jha so that there next film Gangajal gets a good opening?

A. Unlikely no award has any effect at the box office.

A. HDDCS was a big hit in the Mumbai territory but did not do that well elsewhere. Film Information has it as a flop.

A. With KNPH Hrithik Roshan created mass hysteria and if he had followed up with more hits he would have become a superstar.

 

 

Q. You have Amisha Patel with the best Net Gross average that is stupid.

A. It is due to films like KNPH and Gadar-Ek Prem Katha but as she has more releases her average will come down unless she gives more super hit films

 

  

Q.with India and Pakistan relations getting better, when will the first bollywood film be shown in Pakistan?

A.That will never happen because Hindi films releasing in Pakistan will mean the end for Majority of Pakistani films and they will not allow that easily.

 

     

Q.how much was salman khan paid for tere naam, and is it true amir khan has received 8 crores for his new film with Ketan Desai (the rising)?
A. Tere Naam is a 14 crore film so Salman would have been paid around 2 crore. The Aamir Khan rumeration can only be confirmed when the film is ready for release.

 

    

Q.I have been waiting unpatiently for Bobby Deols next film, and it’s been ages now. So could u pls find out for me from somewhere what his next few films are in order of release and when is the earliest we will see him on the big screen???

A. His next films are Bardaasht, Kismat, Humko Tumse Pyaar Hain amd Ab tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo and Bardaasht will probably be his next release early next year followed by Kismat.

A.As of now it’s not a blockbuster but may prove to be a Hit (AA). Let’s see

A. As far as earners go it is probably Border. Pre 90's you have Betaab, Paap Ki Duniya and Tridev which were very big musically.

 

 

Q. I wanted to know if Devdas was a universal hit (AAA), i don't think because it was a very big budget film? What's your take on this?

A. In trade terms it was a Big Success. It was sold for a ratio of 3 crore per major territory and it managed to recover its price comfortably in not so good period of bollywood. Makers also recovered their money from India theatrical, Muisc, Satellite and Overseas.

 

 

Q. Have you watched Koi mil gaya? If so what do you think of hrithik's performance? What about the one film wonder tag given to him? Would it remain or change

A. Hrithik has given a great performance and just like the media put him on a pedestal after his first film then continuous Flops came and they labeled him a one film wonder.

 

   

Q. One of country's reliable news channel reported that Tere naam's collections have started dropping from the fourth day, what are your thoughts on this? Is it true?

A. Only in the big cities, small centers are steady

 

   

Q.How will Zameen fare?

A.As we have said above, Zameen will open to great houses and may be turning point of Abhishek Bachchan's career. It is the biggest release in September.

 

   

Q. Who would you say are media made directors?

A. That simple, there is one name above all others Ram Gopal Verma. The media tends to make his films look bigger successes than they actually are. Basically his films have to be made on low budgets as distributors just don't offer good prices for his films. He is a director who has been built up by the media but he is missing the most important thing about a director and that is know the pulse of the audience. Though we would love to be proven wrong let’s if he can do it with Ek.

 

 

Q.Komal Nahta has Gadar on 60 crore but you have it on 75 Crore, why?

A. That 60 crore is for the first 6 months of its run and it did good business in 2002 and is still raking in a lakh or two weekly at the moment. Mr.Nahata gives collections for some weeks and labels them with verdicts and then he just doesn’t update collections. You will also notice our final Net Grosses our normally 15-20% higher than Film Information be it K3G, Chalte Chalte, Andaaz or Bhoot. In the case of Mohabbatein, Lagaan and Koi Mil Gaya it’s around 30% higher.

 

Q. Hi, any news of RUN & YUVA. What r their prospects & what has been the response to their music. Has Khakee made profit for all its distributors? Think the movie's done good considering its huge price

A. Yuva's music has just been released and Run's music is average as far as sales are concerned. Yuva seems to have better chances than Run though all

India success is unlikely. Khakee has made profit all over except CI where it has suffered losses of around 10-15%.

 

  

Q. You said the distributors favor Hrithik romantic/family film but majority of his flops were of the same genre. Thank You for responding

A. That’s true but his 2 big solo successes KNPH and KMG both belong in the romance / family bracket. He has not a major success in any other genre. Even big multistarrer K3G was in romance / family bracket.

A. In Punjab he is only second to Sunny Deol and this is because the state of Punjab has many A Grade Centers (Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Patiala etc) and in these places SRK films record very good collections. But the East Punjab territory also includes Haryana and Himachal Pradesh which mainly consist of small centers (except Gurgaon) and here his films don't do that well. So you are right that he is hot in Punjab.

A.Its too early to talk about Marigold as it faces a tough task to be completed and there is no figure for the budget of Bajirao Mastani at the moment.

A. In the major metros Shahrukh Khan is the biggest star ever seen in the Hindi film industry. The share volume of business done by his last 4 major releases (K3G, Devdas, CC and KHNH) in the metros initially has never been seen before. Obviously his more modest following in the small centers brings him down but that’s also depends on the types of films he is doing. On an all time list in the metros he is the biggest ever seen.

A. Trishna, Hairan and Taqdeerwala were all flops. Barsaat was a semi hit. As for the release dates it’s too early to say as most of those films are not even 50% complete.

Chameli which lost 100% of its investment in CI and loses of 50-90% in other circuits apart from Mumbai and Delhi/UP where loses were around 25%.Ek Hasina Thi has loses of 50-80% in all circuits apart from Mumbai, Delhi/UP and South where it could break even in the improvement continues. Ishq Hai Tumse has loses of 50-60% all over.

A. The trade magazines do not have websites though Indiafm.com use information from Trade Guide.Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander was a Average, Josh was Above Average and Andaaz Apna Apna was Flop. Pyaasa Sawan did not do well but had a reasonable opening. Main Hoon Na may release in April/May.

A.There are no trade sites but when an analyst like Komal Nahta or Amod Mehra says a film collected 10 crore, they are talking about distributor shares.

A. They all have good chances with MSK at the top of the list because of combination of big cast, commercial director and producer with good track record.

A. In the trade it’s the case of out of sight then out of mind. Aamir had Lagaan which did well but not as well it was made out by the media, DCH was an average fare which lost money in many circuits.

 

 

Q. Shahrukh khan is god and has the biggest grosser and yet your site labels them average semi hits when they are super hits blockbusters it’s all crap why?

A. There is a saying in the industry that a film can never be a SuperhIt let alone Blockbuster if it does not do well in the small centers and that’s the biggest problem with Shahrukh starrers. His latest films mainly doing well in multiplexes and big cinemas. It’s the same problem with all city films. KHNH will gross over 35 crore but its distributor share will only be 23 crore because it has done well only in multiplexes.

 

 

Q. If a movie's budget is 25 crore (KHNH) and it's sold for about 15 crore. How do the producers recover their costs?

A. From music / tv / vcd / dvd / overseas rights

A.Families in small cities will not patronise it like a K3G or KKHH

 

   

Q.what a stupid defense u giving for failure of khnh... high price... that way none of the film is a failure coz they can cite high price for not being able to recover their cost in one circuit or the other... or have become scared of offending johars/khan

A. What we were saying is that a film of this urban genre should have been sold like a Chalte Chalte not a Gadar.

 

 

Q.so you at boxofficeindia have also fallen prey to bias and favortism thats why no boxoffice update for khnh... i am sure if the movie will be doing good by now all figures will be put on your site but guess you are in it for money also and johar money is keeping your mum for weeks about failure of khnh..

A.Sometimes collections need sorting out especially of big films thats why there are delays.

 

 

Q. With only 2 hits from the last 15 movies, how can Sunny be even considered a big star?

A. It’s the same with all stars, hits are very hard to deliver. Salman's last hit was Biwi No1 in 1999, Ajay Devgan's was Pyar To Hona Hi Tha in 1998, Akshay’s last hit was Khiladiyon ka khiladi in 1996. Most stars seem to deliver Overflow/Commission films and it’s the same with Sunny, the plus being Sunny has the biggest grosser Gadar to his name.

 

  

Q.I visit your site almost on a weekly basis..Lots of interesting stats...But just one question..How does a file like Devdas which you say has grossed around 38crores become a hit....I thought the movie was made for 45-50crores..so how would the producer make any money out of this? Or is there something else that I am missing...

A. A film's status is calculated by its price status not budget. Devdas had a 3.25 crore per major territory tag, it did hit business. Producers recover their money from theatrical, music, satellite, overseas rights

 

  

Q.when dharamendra gets more hit's then amitab,why media say amitab is super star?

A.Dharmendra had 60 hits in 200 odd films while Amitabh had 40 hits in 100 films. Amitabh has a better hit ratio.

A. We suggest that you get a map of India and colour in the places where you rightly mention it is doing well in and then use a different colour and colour in the places where it is not doing well.

 

   

Q.you mention in biggest hits section that ticket prices were same between 1974-1987... It will mean films like himmatwala, andha kanoon, betaab etc were bigger hits than dharmveer/amar akbar anthony etc... As these films have grosses similar... hard to believe

A.Films were doing excellent business in the 70's and that meant prices of films going up a lot in the early 80's. Big starcast films like Amar Akbar Anthony were sold for around 25-30 lakhs per major territory in 1977 while a new cast film like Betaab was sold for 35 lakhs per major territory and Himmatwal and Aandha Kanoon were 45 and 50 lakhs respectively.So the grosses may be roughly the same but the profit of the earlier films was much more.

 

    

Q.Komal Nahta called Devdas a blockbuster but you have it has a semi hit Why.

A. Mr Nahta has a tendency to go overboard with the media but his actual classifications are there in Film Information in which he has to answer to distributors and exhibitors as it is mainly read by them and in the Jan 4th 2003 issue he has given Devdas a classification of A1 which is a Hit same as us.

A. Avtaar, Souten, Maqsad and Agar Tum Na Hote were hits but other stars were delivering more hits in the 80's.

A. A lot of those films had Vinod Khanna in small roles like Sacha Jhuta,Aan Milo Sajna and Pathar Aur Payal. Vinod Khanna was the second highest paid actor in 1980 but not in 88,89 and 90.
