Rewind - Twenty Five Years Of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was released twenty five years ago today and it became the second film in history to cross the 50 crore nett mark. The film did not beat the record of Hum Aapke Hain Kaun...! which released a year earlier but a 50 crore nett total was still an insane number because barring these two films the next best total was 25 crore nett.
The film made Shahrukh Khan a big star and it was this image in the film which was to catapult him into boxoffice superstardom a few years later with films like Dil To Pagal Hai and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. A year earlier Hum Aapke Hain Kaun...! had a restricted release initially but Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was a normal release for a love story barring Bihar where it had just a one cinema release only in Patna.
The film was a Diwali release and clashed with a Rishi Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit starrer and collected 55 lakhs nett apprx on day one while Yaraana was 46 lakhs nett. More than that Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge opened to 95% while Yaarana was 70%. There was also the Dev Anand film Gangster which released on the same day.
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is till today the biggest BLOCKBUSTER from the YRF banner with nearly 5 crore footfalls. The next best are Sultan, Dhoom 3 and Dil To Pagal Hai with around 3 crore. It also was the first film from YRF to score in the East as till that time all the YRF films be it their biggest HITS like Daag (1973), Kabhi Kabhie (1976) or Darr (1993) could never really perform in the Eastern circuit (West Bengal, Bihar, Assam and Odisha)
The film celebrated a silver jubilee run in around 50 theatres across the country and in Mumbai city and Delhi city the collections were pretty much similar to Hum Aapke Hain Kaun...! with 13 crore nett coming from Mumbai and 5.50 crore nett coming from Delhi city. In Overseas it created history by collected almost $5 million and this was at a time when $500k was regarded as a huge total though obviously things changed post Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.

Dilwale V Bajirao Mastani Worldwide Comparison
top every time irrespective of content. The clashes include big victories against rivals Aamir Khan in 1995
(Ram Jaane v Akele Hum Akele Tum) and Salman Khan (Don v Jaan-E-Mann).
In India Dilwale did less business which is seen as a defeat in Indian Media but if the wider picture is seen with Worldwide numbers
its a comfortable victory for Dilwale and this was only due to the clout of Shahrukh Khan as the film was not liked
as to Bajirao Mastani which is hugely appreciated.
The ratings of Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani are below and show
impressions which is basically the number of television sets that viewed the films on their respective premieres.
Dilwale - 67,61,000
Bajirao Mastani - 54,76,000
Another point to note is that Dilwale in the final count has come out ahead of Bajirao Mastani in Worldwide, overseas, television,
music and digital and only down in India theatrical as the film was weak but even there the gap would have been hardly anything
if that intolerance debate did not happen at the time of release which cost the film around 15% business.
It badly affected the film in Punjab, Haryana, UP, MP, Gujarat, Bihar and Maharashtra.
Shahrukh Khan has probably defeated every other major star out there in a clash.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham : The International Phenomenon
Karisma Kapoor - The Box-Office Sensation In Late 1990s
Since you are doing so many films with different filmmakers, are you saying you are ready to take risks with your career?
Even Dil To Pagal Hai was a risk, considering most actresses refused to do the role. I took it up when Shahrukh & Madhuri's success was at its peak. I have always taken risks. When I joined this industry, I wanted to make it. I wanted to prove myself as an actress and be at the top.
I am sure everybody dreams of reaching a certain height. Thankfully, it happened with me. My hard work paid off with Raja Hindustani. I wanted to win an award and I got one. Then I got the National Award for DTPH. I feel I have achieved what I wanted to.
Today people think since I have five hits like Biwi No 1, Haseena Maan Jaayegi, Hum Saath-Saath Hai,Jaanwar and even Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge to my credit, what else could I want? I feel that all this is an added bonus for me. It's like the icing on the cake. I have proved myself over the years. With me, its never been that I gave a hit and I have become the rage like its happening these days.
Do you think you were appreciated in DTPH?
Honestly, I did feel that if I had it in me to do well in that role, and believe me I had the confidence, I thought people would notice me. And what better chance to prove myself than in a Yash Chopra film, opposite Madhuri Dixit and Shah Rukh Khan? You have to take risks and you have to do something different.
Different as in...?
I have worked a lot on my looks. In Raja Hindustani, which released in '96 and DTPH, in Hero No 1 which released in '97 and Biwi No 1... in all of them my look has been different. From my hairstyle to my makeup and clothes. In Jaanwar, I was a simple girl who only wears kajal and a choti. In Dulhan Hum Le Jaayenge, I wore a short wig.
Apart from the performance, I think looking good is also important. Wearing a short outfit doesn't mean that you are glamorous or sexy. You have to grow in that as well. You owe that to your fans.
How do you feel about your No 1 status?
In 1996, I was the No 1 actress because of Raja Hindustani. Kajol was nowhere around because she did not have any significant releases. Then in 1998 Kuch Kuch Hota Hai happened and people were chanting Kajol's name. I didn't have any release that year. Now, again, I am at the top. It feels great because you have worked so hard that you feel good about yourself. Eventually, though, these numbers don't matter.
So your hard work has paid off finally?
Yes, today I feel all my hard work has paid off. Those barbs and brickbats made me a stronger person and helped me reach where I am. I have no regrets, no bad feelings or ill feelings towards anybody. I feel it is a part of life, part of being in the industry.
