Jai Santoshi Maa released in 1975 is probably the biggest box office surprise in the history of Hindi cinema.

The unknown film grossed more than big budget films like Deewaar, Pratigya and Dharmatma all released

at around the same time. Deewaar was a huge hit but Jai Santoshi Maa outgrossed it all over apart from Mummbai and South.

The film is the biggest return on investment in history if we go the production cost against the recovery

but obviously the total cost went up as many more prints had to be made than anyone in the film had bargained for.

Jai Santoshi Maa was released with just 11 prints in Delhi / UP and that too with no print playing in Delhi city but

it was when it opened in Delhi which was even then a premium market in third week that the Delhi/UP trade knew the film
